Wow. The EU is open to the idea of fast-tracking Ukraine's entrance. This seems like NATO lite... so I don't think Putin will respond well to that.

@Ricardus I'm no expert, but the only way this current campaign of heavy bombardment makes any sense to me is if he's aware that he has lost, and wants to maximize the cost of reconstruction, as well as the misery and chaos. Turn Ukraine into a money pit for the EU, and Europe may hesitate to help the Byelorussians throw out Lukashenka ― or some such idea.Militarily it's absurd, because bombarded cities are the perfect environment for partisans to tie down armour and infantry.

@publius Yeah. A kind of desperation.I mean it's hard to know for sure, but I think Putin definitely miscalculated.

@publius @Ricardus Remember this:- The EU has, right now, no military power of its own, despite encouraging noises coming out of France and Germany.- On the other hand, Europe has plenty of money, and I doubt rebuilding Ukraine is going to "tax" it much (pun intended). Especially since Ukraine would probably use EU help to buy stuff from the EU. Infinite money loop! Prosperity for all!

@ParadeGrotesque @publius France has some military power. I'm not sure but probably 2nd to England, but they aren't in the EU.

@Ricardus @publius France has a slightly bigger military than England.England has a slightly budget than France. And, yes, Brexit was financed in part by Russian-related money. Surprise!

@publius @Ricardus I am no military expert but I keep hearing about these 14 (20mile) long Russian convoys of trucks on the highways into Kyiv. They even show satellite images. You’re not going to tell me that the Ukrainian military doesn’t know exactly where they are. Seems like it would be easy just to pummel the road and knock gobs of them out. Maybe there is a strategic reason for not doing so, or maybe it is a lot more difficult that I think. Or maybe they fear escalation?

@cs @publius I actually heard they were "40 miles long" from a source today. But yeah, I was wondering the same thing.
