@TurboNormie Russia has the distinct advantage of slonking US export tech in Syria on a bi monthly basis now with exported S300. USA doesn't have that advantage. Russians know what we are capable of more than we know of them and it would be too much of a risk.

The government signed contracts for a certain number of planes (something like 500) and then started cutting the order for "cost savings." But that just increase the per-airframe cost so that the taxpayers were paying the same amount for fewer airplanes. They ended up building less than 200. And then Obama had all the tooling destroyed so that replacement parts couldn't be made and no new airframes could be constructed. Their reasoning at the time was that we didn't need the F22 because nobody else had anything close to its capabilities.

He wanted to go all in on the F35 and didn't want any future administrations to have the option of undoing his decision. Maybe some smarter people shuffled the tooling around to keep it from getting scrapped.
