Geckos.Best friends from day one. LOVE having them loose in my house.When small, they hunt spiders, mosquitos, and scavenged bits and crumbs.When bigger, cockroaches.And, sadly, they have an affinity for coffee.I went in the dark to rinse my cup with hot water from my machine - and scalded a baby gecko trapped in the bottom of my cup.STOMACH PUNCH. So sad.Never again, I always check now, still mourning the loss with guilt pangs.I leave coffee out for them now. And they lap it up.

@StevenDouglas gecko poop...salmonella. Hate finding them smashed in door frames. Certainly do great bug management.

@Wictor_Babe You know your geckos!Yep, salmonella's the biggest threat by far (like 1 out of four or 5!).Even with good housekeeping there are just too many ways into and out Vietnamese homes to control the population. The main thing is to disinfect surfaces, but especially wherever they do poop - which is obvious. Fortunately, unlike rodents, geckos tend to do it in the same spots - almost like they're housebroken!

@StevenDouglas yes I lived in Nicaragua... and they liked certain corners with shadows...so I would put down paper in some areas to collect poop. In Nicaragua we had a HUGE season where flies were super abundant. So gecko poop was prefered over the flies. We had scorpions too. Hated finding them in door frames and cups too!

@Teneseo Thank you, I appreciate the thought. And yes, a lesson.Sometimes I privately keep - and don't want to be rescued from - some of my guilt. Not to beat myself up with, but almost like hanging onto a precious gift - a reminder that I do have empathy and don't mind AT ALL holding myself accountable - even for honest mistakes.And a bit of, "You didn't die in vain, little buddy."Because that memory serves a reminder for me to be more careful overall - even beyond cute little lizards.

@StevenDouglas Have a small contingent of Green Anoles in and around our property. They're bug eating machines! Only problem is they love to hitch a ride on our vehicles. Was heading to the lumber yard not long ago, when I looked up and saw one crawling across the windshield with a distressed look on its face.So, I pulled off on the shoulder, got out and wrangled the little guy into the cab. When I opened the door at my destination, he bolted out - never to be seen again.

@Lemonhead @StevenDouglas Unlike @StevenDouglas (& the majority of the world) I've never had a cup of coffee in my life....Ok.Once.Had to go to the ER as I was visibly vibrating like Hammy in "Over The Hedge" but I digress...My challenge has been to keep the 3 furry velocirapators (cats) from doing their serial-killer thing, as they attempt to dispatch the lizards.I'm now planning a coffee offering to the gecko exterminators, which should also repel the felines 😎
