Oslo by night seen from my balcony - the weather continues to be shit but at least the rain makes everything glow

@thor Wonderful city. I was there a few years ago and absolutely loved it. I wanted to visit a stave church but we came to Oslo via Copenhagen and Denmark absolutely destroyed our budget.

@thor Yeah, it was brutal. My wife and I went to McDonald's on our first day in Copenhagen, thinking it would be relatively inexpensive, and it really stung when I realised how much I'd paid for our meals.

@Burzum "relatively inexpensive" only works in McDonald's if you order the plain cheeseburger

@Zergling_man @Burzum that's the sort of thing i do when i want to eat out but also save money. a lot of people will also go for something like a $4 sub sandwich at a corner convenience store.Scandinavians prepare food at home most of the time and only order food for special occasions. chains like McDonalds and Burger King don't really fit that model. they're kind of overpriced for what you're getting.

@Zergling_man @Burzum on that note, i find it funny that they call themselves "restaurants" - they don't even have cutlery or tablecloths.

@thor @Burzum Reminder that Maccas tried to go burger-fancy and bring them to your table on wooden boards.

@Zergling_man @Burzum i have tried burgers from places like that. they're underwhelming considering what you're paying. there's only so much you can do to improve upon the concept of "hamburger" tbh

@Zergling_man @Burzum before burgers, Denmark invented these things - smørrebrød - which are popular at cafes and dinner parties around Scandinavia.

@Burzum @thor Oh you did mention that, hurr.Thing with party food is that they're always too small. They get served for lunch and I eat 10 of them and feel nothing.

@Zergling_man @Burzum yes, although in Denmark itself, they have places that specialise in them. it's a bit of a tradition.

@Zergling_man @Burzum these aren't small. those are sandwich-sized. and they use some heavy-duty pumpernickel-style bread made with rye so they fill you up. these are a meal, not a snack.

@thatguyoverthere @Burzum @thor @Zergling_man Smorgasbord comes from Swedish “smörgåsbord”, which literally means “table of sandwiches”. Smörgås = sandwich, bord = table.
