IRC is the most accessible, it's simple, text only, doesn't require a bloated web browser and runs on bad internet communications.

Why in 2022 some people are still using IRC is beyond me.This is ancient technology that barely does what it's supposed to do. It's time to stop! There's so many better libre solutions! IRC must die!#IRC #Tech #Internet

@unfa 1) it doesn't require registering or providing email address; 2) there are lightweight clients that do not require executing any JavaScript nor consume piles of RAM. (P.S. Ironically, I use IRC through Matrix's + Element, which, indeed, does the latter).

@setthemfree @unfa > so many better libre solutionsI know of element. What other decentralized solutions are available that work better than element?

@MarshTackyBall @setthemfree Element is a Matrix client, one of many. I don't use Matrix myself, but it's already heaps better than IRC.

@unfa Please name one being able to support 5-10k users in the same chat-room without dying.Having 2k users in an announcement-only room in Matrix is already taking ages to load the state of the room…Having 5-10k users in a Twitch chat (using IRC) is working properly.

@falktx @unfa I think ircv3 and especially ergo.chat as a ircd could bring irc to 2022. The most interesting ones are chathistory, always on without a bouncer, message/account tags and proper web client support. Also check out the lounge as a web client, it even supports voice messages/file uploading/link previews... Techy people love irc because it's so simple, ircv3 also makes it extensible.

@falktx @unfa Also with bridges getting better and better there's not really a need to missionary people to one tech or the other, that's only reproducing the behaviour of big corps. The other way is true, just plump different open platforms together and let people choose what they want to use.

@falktx I understand that developers can get it to be comfortable, and get things down with it, but whenever I am forced to use IRC, I suffer.I cannot fix typos in my messages.I cannot read a message that was sent when I wasn't online.I cannot send screenshots to get or give help.Everyone is in a single room so with 5 conversations happening at once it's a huge mess. I understand that it works for some specific groups or people - but I don't think "normies" or even "users" are part of that.
