Forget about ham radio. The FCC was founded to shut down Father Coughlin. They live for silencing the right and they have plenty of lawfare tools, ones that broke the most popular radio personality of all time. The way is shut.

@judgedread Yep. Ham radio is full of communists and whackers that dedicate their time to being extreme rules police when they aren't trying to sell themselves as the greatest search and rescue asset ever. The technical skills are good to have, but as a useful service ham is not worth major investment.

@DemonSixOne Hams always remind me of Twitter users who haven't been banned yet.'Just follow the rules, it isn't so hard.' - never says anything that would get you in trouble during a conference with HR.

@DemonSixOne @judgedread Asynchronous comms can have value. I think that if you decide to fire up your radio and accurately identify your station and talk about things that might get you in hot water, there will be no shortage of neckbeards with giant callsigns ironed onto trucker hats that will delight in attempting to direction find your transmitting location. But it's entirely possible to send coded messages in 'plain text' that can have value to interested parties. But if you overtly attempt to operate outside of their 'rules', the real investigative arm of the FCC is absolutely old fat guys that live for this stuff, and they have nothing else to do with their lives.

@case @DemonSixOne @judgedread HAM radio operators are the most stolid, rule-adherent, rigid thinkers I've ever interacted with. They live not for the comms, nor the community, but thrive in an environment totally devoid of deviation from protocols.

@one_of_three @DemonSixOne @judgedread it's absolutely true, and the paradox is listening to grumpy old men bitch and moan about how the country is going to shit. These same laughable old farts, that never identify their stations (imagine that, or if they do bother to identify, it's usually something like kay8mumblemumblemumble), will be the first to want to help going after someone else, that didn't play radio the way they play radio. Still, I feel like there are ways of using radios for legit comms if things go sideways.

@case > old fat guys that live for this stuffWhat is it with old fat fucks and thinking some shit tier gov license suddenly means they are some sort of authority. Notice the same shit with CCW permits.I spend more time playing with ISM hardware these days simply because the commercial market makes demands out of the hardware that drives innovation up and costs down. I suppose there is value in a numbers station as you describe but the real interesting stuff is happening in digital, and the DXeroids seem to stay away from it because from what I'm told, attaching a computer to a radio is the cancer that is killing the spectrum.

@DemonSixOne >but the real interesting stuff is happening in digital, and the DXeroids seem to stay away from it because from what I'm told, attaching a computer to a radio is the cancer that is killing the spectrum.Yeah, many of the old guys hate digital modes, I think because that typically excludes they ancient tube radios, which are often used as the golden ticket to enter the 'I've been licensed since 1903!' nonsense that somehow automatically demands you defer to their limitless knowledge.Aside from the numbers station (btw, I like that comparison!) I think even stuff like SSTV than be used in the open, and yet still pass useful info in the xmitted image. Ultimately, for asynchronous stuff, if you're not xmitting at a scheduled time, on the same frequency, and doing the same sneaky stuff, I think it's very possible to pass info, in the open, that would be almost never scrutinized.

@case Its worse than that, the old guys hate digital for gatekeeping reasons, "cw or it doesn't count", etc. Same reason the hate for when the china SDR units came around and made HF accessable to people that didn't want to dump $1500 on an icom.SSTV is interesting, hadn't considered that. On the subjct of TV, whitespaces are very interesting particularly with FHSS.

@one_of_three It's the inevitable result of having a hobby where the state can both shut it down at will and is very, very interested in maintaining absolute control. Not for nothing that broadcast licenses are worth millions.

@judgedread Saw this post while looking up 'ham radio' in my instance's search. Went and found some recordings from Coughlin. Here's a link if you want to spread it around:https://archive.org/details/Father_Coughlin

@admin Alas, Archive dot org is largely funded by Google so I do not use it. Appreciate the thought, though.
