@RacistReimu @mcduquesne @jeffcliff voting is essentially using the system for your own ends, while you may desire it for perceived legitimacy, it is still the tool and domain of people who absolutely hate you. You are essentially using the tools and means of the enemy to do good. And while you may have some successes with it, the end result will inevitably be corruption, evil and failure

@HEREWARD_SILVATICI @jeffcliff @mcduquesne there are so many firewalls now to prevent us from getting anywhere near to power using democratic means, just look at how much trouble the jew Zemmour is having to get on the poll in France; look at the fall of Golden Dawn; they will do anything to destroy us. Hitler also had the tacit support of much of the German establishment, judiciairy and police. Reverse for us.

@jeffcliff @waxwing I read something similar in Dutch news this morning, that basically anyone participating in or donating to these protests can get their (Canadian) bank account frozenThat would mean protesters can't can't pay their lawyers, which itself is a clear human rights violation. But maybe there's some caveat there. If that actually happens at any meaningful scale it's a sad but effective ad for Bitcoin. But we'll have to see: nuance generally doesn't get communicated as quickly.

@jeffcliff @waxwing I wonder what the Canadian was thinking here though. The most straight-forward way to remove the trucks would be to use the army. That might happen without any bloodshed, but the images would make the international news.Abusing anti-terrorism and AML laws to hurt protestors financially is less visible, but arguably far worse for the long term health of a democracy. Unless a court strikes it down, then it might be a good thing that they tried this move.

@sjors @waxwing > The most straight-forward way to remove the trucks would be to use the armyThere's cultural hangups here about using the army on our own people. We haven't done that...probably ever. Especially against whites. Technically using them at Oka wasn't. Using them at the Riel rebellion technically wasn't.> Abusing anti-terrorism and AML laws to hurt protestors financially is less visible, but arguably far worse for the long term health of a democracy. Unless a court strikes it down, then it might be a good thing that they tried this move.I'm not seeing the courts stopping this - these laws have very sharp teeth and they've been waiting to strike at their opponents with them for awhileI wonder if I'm going to get caught up in the middle of it even

@sjors @jeffcliff that analysis is reasonable in isolation, but look at the recent history of the interaction of the banking system with the political system (like, last 50 years starting with BSA but especially last 10 years or so).Re: "abusing anti-terrorism and AML laws", I would say those laws, as used today, are intrinsically abuse. I think you're also old enough to remember a time when 'terrorism' wasn't a blanket excuse for authoritarianism, though admittedly it's a distant memory ...

@waxwing @jeffcliff I don't know if all AML laws in all countries are "intrinsically abuse". Some of it is probably justifiable. Using it to crush protests - even riots - clearly isn't though. The laws I'm familiar with certainly have problematic aspects, some parts may even be illegal. E.g. Dutch banks have to report "unusual" transactions, which is much broader than "suspicious". This might be mass surveillance under the EU human rights treaty, but so far nobody successfully challenged it.

@waxwing @jeffcliff originally these laws were designed to fight organized crime. But then after 9/11 they shoehorned "terrorist financing" into it, which is always dicy.I wouldn't say it's always bad: a law that prohibits you from knowingly sending money to Isis is probably acceptable. As long as are checks and balances on what can be added to that list. But a law that requires banks to prevent such transactions at all cost is much more problematic, and that's what often ends up happening.

@waxwing @jeffcliff so in the case of Canada, a good check/balance would be that if such a law ever prevents payment to a lawyer, the prime minister goes to jail for 5 years.

@waxwing @jeffcliff of course such a law would also need its own checks and balances, because new "strong" leaders have a habit of trying to throw their predecessors in prison for frivolous reasons.

@sjors @waxwing this reading of history is incorrect. While it is true that there was probably some origin, especially in the american context of these things being used against, and inspired from anti-mob tools....they come from UN treaties like the" International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism Adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in resolution 54/109 of 9 December 1999 " which couldn't possibly have been inspired by 9/11post-9/11 all they had to do is ratify that treaty, and force countries to ratify it - in the case of canada they literally copy/pasted that treaty into lawthat treaty alone would have allowed this sort of thin - it's only grown worse from there, though, especially in the canadian context see : https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4345350501

@sjors @jeffcliff > I don't know if all AML laws in all countries are "intrinsically abuse"This is where we disagree. I consider 'money laundering' to be 'financial thoughtcrime' (borrowing Orlin Grabbe's characterization). You can't ethically justify massive degradation of individual security, just because it helps law enforcement. Should we have CCTV cameras in every room of every private house? Should we prevent people buying shoes without ID to stop criminals running away?

@Jackuu @RacistReimu @jeffcliff The struggle against our innate base nature and against those who revel in it gives life purpose. The more moral and intelligent a people the longer the government can survive the decline. True all governments will eventually become irredeemably corrupt. As long as the Nation is stronger than the government the government can be replaced. If the government is stronger than the nation, then the people will end up enslaved to foreign emperors.

@sjors @jeffcliff faulty memory, it turns out: I was mixing "The End of Ordinary Money" in my head with "Money laundering is financial thought crime", almost certainly because I read them around the same time (early 2013).J Orlin Grabbe's blog was taken down at some point, but it had some fascinating musings on digital cash, encryption, and other cypherpunk-adjacent stuff. Here is the formerly mentioned blog post, mirrored:https://hermetic.ch/crypto/kalliste/money1.htmIt is long, but I think worth a read.
