@kev I’m sorry that you feel like this, even if I don’t really work and don’t have my own family (my kids) sometimes I feel like that too. I’ll say my advice but probably it won’t apply to you but I’m serious, when I feel like that usually I smoke weed an evening or two, it makes me think about everything and usually I find out whats wrong, solve it and I’m good for months

@kev whoa, burnout is serious, man. The first step in dealing with it, though, is recognizing that not everything is alright and you are indeed getting into it. You're in the right direction.I ain't no therapist, but from experience, focusing on the perceived joy of things has helped me. Think about the blessing of spending minutes doing stuff that brings you joy, not the hours you have to drudge through to get there.Take care, hope you recover!

@kev You might also have Long Covid. It can happen even after a light Covid and cause extreme tiredness. You could ask a doctor to give you oxygen. That helps against tiredness from LC, but not with burnout.https://www.bbc.com/news/health-57833394

@kev The covid pandemic has been stressing everyone out for the last couple of years; there are more and more CVEs being logged all the time; it is an accumulation of things. And that's not touching on anything from your personal life ...I had about 3.5 weeks off over the new year period. It wasn't nearly enough to recharge me. At this stage I probably need months off, and even if I did the outside world would bring new stress of some kind.I'm having to get used to "doing less" at $dayjob. I don't like it, but I allow myself more time off inbetween tasks. I'm not sure that's helping much either, but taking the view that "it's not me, it's all of us" helps.

@kev I find that taking a little time off (as you did) can make things worse, because I spend that time thinking about having to go back, and wondering what's accumulating in my inbox while I'm out.I have yet to find an answer. @kev I didn't want to scare you, but now burnout and long covid can get mixed up. And treating lc like one would treat burnout would be a mess.Burnout is psychological, lc is (also) not getting enough oxygen. A doctor should figure out which you could have. But if you tell a doc you have burnout, he might just treat for this. If you say you could have either, the doc has to check that.

@kev Such phases of depressive moods can always occur. It is certainly important to find out what the causes are and whether it is more than just a phase. The first step has been taken and you realise that something is wrong. I don't know enough about the British health system, but it would certainly be good to go to a professional for a diagnosis. Is it physical or psychological? Maybe just a winter blues? And what can help you?

@kev I feel like this a lot. It's been a long life and I often feel like I am drowning in the mundanity of it all. There are a couple of things that seem to help. One is meditation. Developing a regular mindfulness practice has helped more than everything else combined. But a great one in a pinch, spontaneous adventure. Drop everything, pile everybody in the car and go somewhere you have never been and do something you have never done. Easier said than done, but it works better than staycation.

@kev I’ve battled this off and on last couple of years. I think it’s a combination of things. I’ve been digging at it for a while and I think the biggest thing that changed for me is I used to have time to my self every few months by traveling. VS now with family and job I’m on 24/7 and I end up depriving my self of full night of sleep staying up later to get that time. Which of course only makes it worse. :)

Healthy life style, food, relationships, exercise, personal time of joy, etc.3. Do you feel a sense of purpose in your life?4. Are you working too much at your job?5. @kev Hi! Aside from all well-meant advice shared here, I think this is where professional help should come in. If you have a pain somewhere, you go to the doctor. No shame. Getting your mental health checked when you feel something heavy like this is sadly not common yet, but I would advise to seek a therapist, albeit now for just regularly taking time to reflect on your health with someone who has seen a lot of people on different places on the mental health spectrum.

@kev There are some good self-tests on the internet about burnout, for example this one: https://questionnaires.bma.org.uk/burnout-questionnaire/?OpenFormAnd then it's important to talk to your wife and family about it. They will probably notice that you are not feeling well. This can cause them a lot of worry. These are just a few brief thoughts. The issue is indeed complex and it is good and important to seek professional help early on.

@Erik @kev agreed. One of my colleagues had a burnout last year. We connected them to our company's doctor (an external trusted person, not the company's person but invoices land with the company) to work out a plan with them that felt balanced and created a path forward. Three months on they were fully back with renewed energy (over that time they built up their work hours, but it started with real rest and freedom of obligations for a while)

@kev I had a similar situation last spring. I had way too many accumulated tasks, that I had to jump between daily and I was hardly making any progress with bigger projects. One day it all crashed down. I didn't see it coming, and I had to take sick leave for a month after it hit. What helped me was a new routine for work tasks and schedules. Attitude re-adjustment and daily meditation. @kev This is my advice based upon your response, but of course do as you wish with it.1. Determine why you don't love yourself. Then learn to love and respect yourself.2. Improve your own self care practices. Take yourself on a date, I'm not joking, seriously.3. Think about what gives you purpose and fulfillment. Re-enforce to make a strong purposeful life.Continued in next comment...

@kev 4. Find ways to reduce your work hours per week. More hours doesn't equal good. For short period of time sure, but not long term.5. Look at what you can control to reduce responsibilities in work and personal life. If it's bad enough this may mean a new job.6. Ahh, sorry to hear that. However, this has a big impact on yourself. Reflect on this and even look at ways to learn deal with those unresolved issues of loss and abuse.

@kev I feel you a lot. Such thoughts are not unfamiliar. I called it "lost my mojo" at times. Please consider talking to someone. That's not always a magic bullet, but the role of professional (active) listeners is underrated. You don't have to reach an unbearable state to be entitled to get help.Personally I think getting help less about getting told what to do or getting prescriptions, but about breaking out of isolation and getting asked the right questions.

@kev Some people suffer mental pain, can't pinpoint the reason, and don't reach out for help, because they can't say how bad it is. Instead it would be much more appropriate to only not reach out, if one knows how bad it is (and if it's not bad). If one doesn't know that indicates that at least for knowing that getting help is appropriate.
