I am usually the one willing to give #Mozilla second chances, but what is even going on?Working with #Facebook, of all people?https://blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/privacy-preserving-attribution-for-advertising/

@joel when I tried to find this article back after reading it, using the terms 'Mozilla blog Facebook' I first found a couple of articles of them bragging about their container function being able to completely shut out Facebook from your system. Then this :(

@joel disgusting. Advertising is what ruined the web in the first place. enabling advertisers (even "privacy friendly" ones) is ALWAYS a bad idea...

@joel Or as I referred to them in my most recent blog post, "the-company-I-refuse-to-refer-to-as-Meta" :)Not sure at this point what to think about Mozilla. I'm just not sure where to move next if I abandon them, I suppose. I've enjoyed Firefox too much and really don't want something Chromium-based.

@joel @unperson plus, why are they even lifting a finger for advertisers, one of the biggest drivers of making the web a shitty place? so clueless 😞

@vandrar @joel I am disappointed to see this sort of reaction. The technology should be judged on its merits, not by who developed it. I agree that Mozilla working with #Facebook is a signal, but it shuold be a signal to review the idea with a careful eye, rather than to dismiss it unseen or criticize Moz for who they worked with.Realistically, the current web #privacy nightmare isn't going to end overnight. Making things better is more likely to succeed than trying to make things perfect.

@vandrar @joel 2/ Also large corps like #Facebook are complex. I think FB is a net harm to the planet, but within FB we know there to be whistleblowers and activists for values we share. What if this cooperation is the work of a privacy advocate within #FB, telling managers "here's an idea that will recover part of the huge revenue losses Apple's privacy policy cost us, while making people happier with their privacy on FB"? I don't know if that's the case obviously, but neither do you.

@jgoerzen @joel that might very well be the case, we will find out when all is said and done and also developed and implemented, but I found this red-coloured flag to be enough for me to try and switch away to a different browser (a Firefox fork). The product itself has made me very happy, and it might do so again in the future if this all pans out to be nothing harmful

@vandrar @jgoerzen In a way, Firefox might as well make some sort of come back. Brave has managed to split the privacy community working with advertisers constantly and their crypto business while being the most private browser by default. If Firefox manages to do something decent, there sould still be hope

@joel There used to be an advertising maxim along the lines of: “I know that 50 percent of my advertising doesn’t work, but I don’t know which 50 percent!”I think that was fine, and as a normal person going about the world, I see no reason to try to improve it. I think the old standard is the gold standard. 😆

@jgoerzen @joel I've been putting of getting rid of Firefox for a while, after I kept getting annoyed by their sponsored pinned items on my new tab page, their "experiments" where they insert certain things that are not in the consumers' best interest. I feel like Mozilla is going completely fail, financially they aren't doing great and going for a deal with a company they pretty much declared to be evil earlier seems like sell-out move to remain in existance.

@vandrar That's odd... I have my new tabs set to be blank and they're still always blank. But I agree, I'm not terribly pleased with everything firefox is doing. I get that they're a non-profit that has to get money from somewhere, and it's a tough space to compete in. But every partnership seems to undermine their integrity as an "independent" browser somehow.

@CarlCravens the thing about their non-profit status is though, that Mozilla Foundation is indeed a non-profit, but the Foundation owns the Mozilla Corporation, a commercial entity with employees and profit. Feels a bit weird. There's many open source projects that run on contributors not employed by a company, would that not be an option for a browser? Is a modern web browser just too complicated not to have a massive company behind it?

@joel I'm disappointed... :( I love using Firefox as a browser, I've gotten it just the way I like it. Not sure if any other browsers offer as much customization and plugins. I guess I'll keep my eyes peeled for an alternative but like you, I'll be sticking to Firefox for now.

@joel Gross. I am trying out Vivaldi, but Firefox is still my main browser. I really don't want to have to go a Chrome/Chromium based browser. But also don't want to stick around while Mozilla joins the evil villain brigade. :(

@joel Eh. I'd rather have them in the discussion than outside of the discussion. These companies will come up with a system, whether it's good for privacy or not. If Mozilla can help to come up with a system that allows targeted advertising without or with less of the privacy problems, that's a big win for everyone.

@joel Mozilla – the Silicon Valley corporation that exists because of half a billion dollars from Google every year – is working as designed.
