When I was a kid, i dreamt of:- space travel: now owned by billionaire dickeads + the military;- robots: now owned by Boston Dynamics, Google + the military;- computers: now owned by Google + the military; It took me a while to figure that my kid's dream was mostly dictated by imperialist, expansionist, extractivist and militarist propaganda.Hope generations will dream of soil, funghi, insects, nutrients, species and their beautiful interlocked complexity. so much cooler than computers!

@sych the so-called "transhumanists" who want to divert all research to be able to pay to stay alive despite becoming old and to cheat death, are already attempting it...But i feel like biology can defend itself against billionaire dickheads better than robots... or computers as we harshly realized in those recent years....

@jz "Hope generations will dream of soil, funghi, insects, nutrients, species and their beautiful interlocked complexity. so much cooler than computers!" 😊 Just that phrase already deserves a follow. Well said!

@jz agree ! but for that, that next generation need strong storytelling in that sense (like "nausicaa in the valley of the wind" f.ex.) (here it's implanted in my next gen ;) )and computing can also be thought as a "garden" thing more than "factory" (you even grow silicon f.ex. )new stories and media needs to be written still ...

@bob no! let's not fall into techno-scientism indistinguishable from magic!computing is and will always be pale attempts at simplifying the chaotic complexity of things. cybernetics aims at eliminating some of the complexity to pretend to be able to understand and predict what is left; what iss actually too complex and infinite to fit into any model is what we have to grasp, that computers can't. like love, beauty, ecosystems, the possibility of all being intangibly "connected" with all...

@bob the fact that biological elements can also be described as turing machine doesnt mean they are *only* turing machines, and/or can be reduced to that.I know cybernetics wasn't *meant* to eliminate complexity, but due to the limitations of computing + the use of cybernetics for aims of profit and/or military expansion (fields where life, the other, are not priority), complexity was never grasped but simplified. and cybernetics every day imposes simplications. How do you see that change?

@jz Ça me rapelle une très vieille interview d'Ivan Illich de 1972 (même si dans son cas il critiquait même l'orientation de la recherche avant même ses applications).

@jz It's a bit tautological take. Money is power is access. If something is useful, it can be weaponized, and it can be used to make money. No surprise the two most powerful groups get first dibs on everything. In other words, anything that isn't innate for humans is either:1) Currently out of reach of humanity;2) Owned by the richest and the military;3) Formerly owned by the richest and the military, and through their use eventually got to be available on a wider scale. With maybe few exceptions.

@jz @ice that image is taken from the thumbnail of a YouTube video parodying the Boston Dynamics robots. Though handgun-wielding humanoid robots may exist somewhere, this image is VFX and you're using it out of its parody context.Google doesn't own computers. The internet was originally a DARPA project.

@jz @sych trying to cheat death is valid. I don't feel bad for death, certainly. The problem is that many of these people are giant assholes and it may never stop without death. That said, it probably doesn't stop _with_ death either.(there is also procreation ultimately needing to go to zero without death.. but i pull things into conversations sometimes)

@jz they figure how to use nuclear fallout to transmit but not pheremones and animal speech. imagine chinese telephone with whale song? imagine bark code with howls?

@nergal @jz I mean dogs mostly communicate through body language and smell, IIRC their barks are kinda like honking a horn and only mean "warning" or "attention", there's no code

@hazelnot @jz was trying to find something on arxiv about dog communication. weird that they do not have high level oral communication like other mammals. only glossed over a couple abstracts though.

@nergal @jz I haven't read any kind of scientific paper about it, I just looked up something like "do dog barks mean anything" when I was high, can't even remember where I ended up reading that 😅

@jz space travel has always had militaristic overtones (as usually represented in fiction) or ties (as implemented). We risk playing into revanchist, regressive myths about some golden past and demoralizing those following a better vision if we don't recognize and acknowledge this.
