@koherecoWatchdog @satur@yarmo@IzzyOnDroid@tallship@vger@pleroma.cloud@niboe@confederac.io@tallshipTo use snikket, you either need an invite or spinup a #snikket node. High barrier to entry. I'm a non techy person, don't know anything about servers. I don't know anyone using snikket. Very limited choices. Then what....? #Signal is suitable for many folks, just like #Whatsapp and #telegram serving different audience needs. Signal may not suit you, but it suits many other folks for their needs.

@mikesixgolf Hi Mike :)I was just about to say, "Ask and ye shall receive."Vger is a free, (mostly) FOSS based, online public access community service that I've been running in one form or another for many years.I've actually been waiting for Snikket to move from beta to general release / production before deploying Snikket services for public use.You seem to have a keen interest in using the technology and I took one more look before offering to spin up services for you. So let me dispel some of your current misconceptions.First, you can get a free instance right now, as they are saying at the Snikket project, with just a few clicks, for free, no wait or invite lists, none of that. When they conclude the beta period, you can continue to host with them for about 25/yr (They say less than 2 Euro/mo) or you can take your data to your own host and continue running for free. That's very reasonable, and actually much cheaper than a free gmail account with Google once you consider what is being stolen from you - which I'm sure you can appreciate and are aware of, since.... well... You are here in the Fediverse so that speaks volumes as to your wisdom :)The other misconception you're relating, has to do with not knowing anyone who uses it - THIS WILL CHANGE the moment you deploy your own Snikket service lolz.Others are, and will immediately become, just as interested as you in trying this out, so that's all you gotta do, tell two friends, and they'll tell two friends, and make a post here in the Fedi that you just launched a Snikket service and you've got a few slots for folks to try it out with you.Okay here's the link, and make sure you follow up by sending me a direct message here or via Matrix or XMPP when the beta period ends and if you don't want to stay with them I'll get you set up under the Vger umbrella:https://snikket.org/hosting/P.S. If you run into any snags setting up your service feel free to reach out to me but I'm confident their technical service team is more than eager to make sure your setup is successful and painless.I hope that helps, and I look forward to hearing back on your honest assessment of how your new community operates! @IzzyOnDroid @yarmo @koherecoWatchdog @tallship @satur

@tallship@pleroma.cloud @mikesixgolf @tallship@misskey.de @IzzyOnDroid @yarmo @satur for some reason i've lost the thread that mikesixgolf’s toot refers to, and that nerdica link also blocks me with “Forbidden -- Access to this profile has been restricted.” I actually used to have a Nerdica account myself but I think they deleted it for inactivity (some #diaspora servers are fussy about inactivity & they don't document it).

@satur @yarmo @IzzyOnDroid @tallship@misskey.de @mikesixgolf @tallship@pleroma.cloud Anyway, I run a #Snikket server and some things are glitchy. It feels like the flavor of the moment, which means the people I on-boarded will likely bounce. One big problem is that #OMEMO is a high-security read-once-&-delete protocol. This means users see some bogus shit error msg like “your client does not support OMEMO” whenever they fetch a msg for the 2nd time.

@tallship@pleroma.cloud @mikesixgolf @tallship@misskey.de @IzzyOnDroid @yarmo @satur It's excessive. The ppl I brought to #Snikket are not state spies with big brains who need extreme security measures like destroying msgs after 1 access. #OMEMO is unsuitable for normies. #OpenPGP is sensible for normies who don’t need msg destruction after one read. But the #iOS version of Snikket apparently does not support openPGP, and that really sucks.

@satur @yarmo @IzzyOnDroid @tallship@misskey.de @mikesixgolf @tallship@pleroma.cloud There’s merit to Snikket and it’s probably the best game in town at the moment, but they’ll lose that position if they don’t back-seat #OMEMO & quickly make #openPGP a universal feature.
