There's a new version of #Vivaldi Browser out today.https://vivaldi.com/new/I know it's not fully open source and it's Chromium based, which makes it a non-starter for some, but there's some pretty cool new features in 5.1. :vivaldi: Vivaldi is pushing hard on the horizontal tab scrolling, but for me the Reading List is the big seller. I don't need the horizontal tab scrolling if I have a reading list.

@mike@fosstodon.org I like Vivaldi's concept, reminds me of the old Opera (and I think some of the devs are coming from the og Opera team?). I still have it installed, ocassionally looking at it. Is it true that only the UI is proprietary? From Chromium based browsers only Vivaldi and Edge has proper vertical tabs, and I am interested if something is in the code that makes it difficult to implement for open source (Brave)?

@parasurv More than just the devs actually. The CEO and founder of Vivaldi is Jón S. von Tetzchner, who along with Geir Ivarsøy originally developed Opera and was the one who really brought Opera to the masses. He has since left Opera and founded Vivaldi, but Vivaldi is working to bring all the best of Opera to Vivaldi. The fact is, Vivaldi is "mostly" open source. There's a big long explanation for it from someone who knows the details better than me:https://vivaldi.com/blog/technology/why-isnt-vivaldi-browser-open-source/

@mike@fosstodon.org Thanks for this! I will probably look at Vivaldi more closely, especially if I can make it run better than the current version of LibreWolf. I love the customization options, but my main problem with browsers (outside of not having horizontal tabs) is the memory usage.

@parasurv Yea, and that's an area where Vivaldi isn't exactly stellar either. In the plus column it has a feature where you can simply right click and choose Hibernate Background Tabs, which unloads those tabs from memory. It can help if you're a tab horder like myself. When you use the browser with only a handful of tabs, it's pretty good. When you've got 50+ open at all times like I do things can get a bit more bloated. That feature is really handy.

@mike Readling list looks promising. I usually used "tab trash bin" for this 🤪

@sanchez Oh, mine would be super packed if I did that. I'd lose track of so much stuff. I usually just end up leaving the tabs open, which is why I have a billion tabs open.

@mike @parasurv hibernating tabs? I’ll have to check that out. What do you like about the reading list?

@unicornfarts So far it's been really cool. My only complaint about it so far is that it's not in the mobile version yet. I'd love to be able to have something on my phone and save it to the Reading List and open it on my computer, or the inverse. The Reading List syncs between computers, so I'm guessing it's a matter of time. This could be the feature that breaks my tab habit.@parasurv

@mike Yeah! I was almost sure that it works just because I tend to have just several tabs open at most times.
