More servers should do whitelist federation. It solves a lot of problems.Even better if we can make tools to discover and “approve” new instances, similar to the approval mode with accounts.RT: https://theosis.church/objects/d709001f-c6fc-445c-98a4-2edf4f1cc94d

Fediblock was only wrong because it's pathological. They don't look before they block, it's hysteria.Just like with Degenerates Fail, I specifically want to run a site without pornography and pedophiles, and there is simply no way to do that when they're always making new sites. Some of these sites even have porn as emotes, or as pfp's. What do you do about that? It's not possible, it has to be curated.I'm not even dogmatic about that, or Poast wouldn't be the first on the whitelist (they've banned me again already, I gain nothing from Poast.)Btw I added Paypig. Any website with fairly large traffic is fine. What I don't want is a billion tiny sites adding nothing but porn and spam. If any site cares enough to want on the list and isn't a porn generator, I'll add them, I'm just not going to compulsively search out the diamond in the turd.

@alex @djsumdog @stevejail I don't really understand what you're trying to say. AFAIK, it's already possible to disable federation in Pleroma's admin settings. Are you trying to say that we should ease the process of companies federating to attract users and then shutting off federation to create isolated platforms? And how would whitelisting by default help that?

I don't see the difference. They didn't give a monkey a typewriter and let him do the programming. But it no longer serves the utility it was meant to serve, and in that sense, both were failures. The Fediverse hasn't solve the problem, it's actually far more vulnerable because everything propagates everywhere.

@djsumdog @alex I can certainly think of some great uses for this. As an example, if I wanted to setup instances for a handful of local churches, I could whitelist all of those instances so that federation only took place among them. It’s definitely not for every instance, but has its applications.

@mike @alex I can see that as a use case. Because of that, we'll likely see several separate fediverses in the future. In a few years, we might hear on the news, "GETTR has blocked all Parler users ... babble babble babble" .. and some shitty news anchor tries to explain, "Well these modern social networks are 'decenteralized' What that means is they send messages to each other like phone companies send phone calls..." (Zoomers are really not that much technologically than Boomers. They both just use the default phone apps without knowing how any of them really work).

@stevejail That's not how e-mail works at all. I run my own e-mail server. There is a big problem with [Google and Microsoft making e-mail unreliable](https://battlepenguin.com/tech/how-google-and-microsoft-made-email-unreliable/) with their fucking shitty spam filters. They don't have whitelists though; not explicit ones. IPs that get a large amount of HAM are flagged algorithmically. In the past, companies would spin up e-mail IPs slowly and start pumping low importance but high volume e-mail through to train those systems (MailChimp does this). I don't think this is true anymore though. Recently I've had a lot more e-mail getting through after moving to a better IP address range, and I barely send a dozen or two e-mail a month. @alex @sergeantcat

They network as extensively as possible and reject deletes from everyone. It's no different than archive.is, essentially. There's nothing inherently wrong with an archival service, but he's essentially trying to hold people hostage with it, and I don't like that. His excuse is that small sites could do it just as well and never tell anyone, but that's not entirely true, not on the scale he's doing it. Not without being noticed, my follow bot got about a dozen reports immediately, people know when they're being watched.

If he ever starts doing things normally I'll absolutely whitelist them too though. My point being that I'm not curating it based on my personal preference except in the sense that this site prohibits lewd content (and it has to, the server is in Singapore.)All anyone has to do is ask me and as long as there's no porn or spam, I'll federate with them, and there's nothing particularly that needs to be added to that process. Maybe automating it through a sort of site-scale follow system (which is what I think Alex suggested?) would make it slightly more convenient, but it's a fine and complete system the way it is.
