I wonder.. are there still people out there arguing that iPhones are overpriced? Like.. I don't really see how they are considering the other options in the market, and the performance they bring on the table.

@metalune I figure most flagship phones are over priced and over speced considering that these days you can buy a perfectly adequate Android or SailfishOS phone for 2 or 3 hundred dollars

@metalune in my opinion, it seems that the software is a bottleneck. It seems too restrictive for some tasks that this hardware could accomplish.

@getimiskon I mean, that depends on what you want to do with it, I personally don't mind it much the way it works right now, there are only a few annoyances which are easily outdone by the hardware and rest of the software experience. But yeah, there could be some amazing things done with the software being unlocked. Same applies to M1 Macs I think

@metalune Apple continues to be great at sales. As an Android user for anti-monoculture reasons, the main considerations are updated OS (not arbitrarily restricted by carrier or manufacturer), <6 in long with 256gb internal storage and decent speed.

@sotolf not arguing that you can't have a perfectly fine phone for less. Definitely you can, I've had that. It's about wether or not people still consider it that overpriced compared to the competition in the field, especially the likes of Samsung

@sotolf I'm wondering wether they're still overpriced in the market right now. Like, back in the days where people mostly complained about them being overpriced was when the Samsung Competitors were like much cheaper, at least IIRC. But now I feel like all of that has silenced. It's not about me arguing wether they're overpriced or not, they are expensive, overpriced is subjective tbh, the way people determine price of anything is kinda fucked up in my opinion anyway.

@metalune Yeah, they are, as I said, bought my phone for 120 or so Euro, does everything I need, fast and reliably, the samsungs are also overpriced btw. You say it's fucked up, and still go for something that is historically overpriced, I don't understand. It's like buying truffles and then saying it's not overpriced but it's fucked up how the prices are detremined. there is one way to change it, and it's not continuing to buy the overpriced shit ;)

@sotolf first off, again, not about wether they are or aren't overpriced, but rather what the general public opinion on it is.Also, it just confuses the fuck out of me that you can buy a whole fucking car for the price of a phone. That just doesn't make sense to me, like at least from the material price of stuff, it just doesn't make sense. Also, I bought it because I think it is worth the money to me. It definitely could've been sold for much cheaper.

@sotolf I see no way that we're going to get out of this situation, I don't think this is necessarily a result of people buying stuff for more than it's worth. But rather for the dynamic economy that we employ of quantity and demand which determines the price.

@metalune Yeah, you hit the nail on the head, the price is there because of demand, and making more demand is somehow the right way to make the demand less to reduce the price? The reason it's overpriced is because people are willing to buy it, because it is a status symbol, it can do less than a 100 euro phone, and still somehow people pay more for it. yeah. They demand so much money for it because people are willing to pay for it to show how "cool" they are.

@metalune It has been apple's modus oprandi for over a decade already. They build demand by being a status brand, and therefore can demand higher prices, it's like a gucci bag or an armani suit. Status brands are generaly way more costly than what you'd have to pay for the same quality of a no name brand.
