Dear Fosstodonians. As many others recently, I am thinking of moving away from GMail due to their recent change of policies (Workspace no more free after mid 2022).I spent a couple of days recently, evaluating various ideas.I have a bunch of options. Seeking your opinion on each.Option A: stay with GoogleOption B: own email server at homeOption C: B but on an external VPSOption D: another provider (Proton? Fastmail? MS 365? Others?)Option E: ?Opinions?Boosts welcome.

@xpil I'll always recommend Zoho, been a happy customer of theirs for a couple of years now.Affordable, EU-based, privacy-focussed, custom domain support. https://www.zoho.com/mail/

@xpil I run my own email at home. Have for about a decade. I started out using hMailServer for many years (windows) but recently moved to Modoboa (dovecot/postfix). I've had no trouble with it and it's absolutely solid. Would be glad to assist if you try that path.

@xpil Well, my take is to stay with Google migrating on a free personal account and using @simplelogin for my personal domain.I'm investigating options for migrating my data between workspace and personal accounts. It's more than 15 years of data and purchases we are talking about.

@xpil I moved my email (with domain) to fastmail years ago, and I'm quite happy with it. I just use gmail for RSS feeds and higher-volume mailing lists.(I wasn't using workspace, just forwarding email there.)

@xpil Self-hosting (especially at home whenever possible) is always a great and fantastic option.Otherwise, there are some nice options, such as:1. Emails from organizations, such as Disroot, RiseUp, Autistici and some others,2. Emails from Tildeverse (or Pubnixes) such as Tilde Club,3. Arguably, emails from ProtonMail, Tutanota and CTemplar are also great.#disroot #riseup #autistici #tildeverse #pubnixes #tutanota #protonmail #ctemplar #selfhosting

@xpil I would personally recommend option C; most big providers like Gmail will simply discard your emails if they're from a residential IP address.I've been running this setup for 2-3 years and it's been wonderful.https://workaround.org/ispmail/buster/I don't have personal experience with it, but Maddy looks like a really interesting option too. If you set it up, please let me know how it goes!https://maddy.emailAs long as you jump through the security hoops of SPF, DKIM, DANE, etc. and give your mail server's IP a couple weeks to build a good reputation with Gmail and the like, you can expect reliable delivery to every provider except maybe Outlook.https://www.nerd-quickies.net/2020/10/20/microsoft-silently-dropping-emails-a-sad-but-true-story/If that would be a problem for you, I'd just go with one of Drew's recommendations. Note that Migadu might still be too small for Outlook to bother whitelisting though.https://drewdevault.com/2020/06/19/Mail-service-provider-recommendations.html(there's a theme here: Outlook is *terrible* for small mail providers and there isn't really anything we can do about it except grumble when we get a bounce)

@xpil Self-hosting is the idealistic solution. It's great as it raises awareness and makes other self-hosters seen. It's terrible because big providers have blinders on and will mercillessly dump you to spam, cause you're powerless over them.As long as you don't feed the giants, you're helping us all.

@xpil if you only need email, C is a great option. OpenSMTPD with dovecot are quite lightweight and easy to configure.I wouldn't go with B because most residential ISPs block port 25 (used for email)

@xpil I've had a similar dilemma recently. I was thinking about options B and C, but figured it would be too expensive for me. A VPS costs almost the same as a regular email provider, and both VPS and at-home setups require tons of maintenance work I wasn't ready for.I have switched to #Mailbox.org. Hosted in Germany (it's important to me that my data isn't hosted in USA), 30 €/mo, and I also get contacts, calendars, and file sync. #ProtonMail is also a great choice.

@xpil I'm not an expert, but..I wouldn't recommend hosting @ home, you have to open up some ports(?) and see if your ISP allows it. There might also be something about static/ dynamic IP addresses.Either with that or an external VPS, there is a slightly higher chance that your emails will end up in spam. Often some IP addresses from VPS providers are blacklisted.I previously hosted my email on my own server on a VPS, this guide was pretty useful: https://github.com/LukeSmithxyz/emailwiz/

@xpil I've recently began using mailbox.org as a provider. So far, I have no complaints: privacy-oriented, EU-based, affordable, and with many advanced features. Moving away from Google as a provider for any service is fundamental. Self-hosting may be ideal, but it's beyond my reach at the moment.

@xpil IONOS.com sells web space and addys. It's really inexpensive. It also comes with a handful of e-mail accounts. I have <first initial><last name>@<fullname>.com.Never had it blocked or any issues. Even when my company tried to "block all webmail", mine still worked.

@xpil There are several turn-key email systems contained within a Docker container.https://mailu.io/1.9/https://github.com/docker-mailserver/docker-mailserverhttps://mailinabox.email/These provide all the various goodies (ex. Spam filtering) and configuration that a public-facing email service would need.If I were you, I'd try this on a VPS before potentially migrating it to your home. You can use a VPS on a temporary basis.

@xpil C. Some domain providers offer you email services, so you don't have to pay for a VPS, or make sure it's well configured and wait until Gmail or Outlook accept you as a valid sender.

@xpil b) is the way to go - if you are motivated to take quite some workload as admin. Dovecot (IMAP) and an smtpd is needed. You also need an external dns server (for mx entries, dmarc and friends). I did it for many, many years and I learned a lot. It was worth it. Otherwise you could pick a hoster in a neutral and privacy-friendly country, like Switzerland. I use https://www.metanet.ch/hosting/web hosting since many years. They are around 8$ per month for domain, email accounts and storage space.

@xpil Also, if you do end up hosting at home, consider setting up two routers in your home: one outer router (connected directly to the Internet) that your external services can connect to, and one inner router (connected to the outer router) that your private devices can connect to.This reduces your security vulnerability without much effort.

I pay for https://posteo.de and https://fastmail.comI added Fastmail when Posteo stopped being able to reliably filter spam out of my inbox. I thought about dropping Posteo, but migrating my old accounts would is more work than $12 a year is worth (the spam is mostly filtered).I've been stunned by how nice Fastmail has been for the past year. Very easy to setup my own domain name, Calenders, and alias emails. Also, I think it is very pretty X)

@xpil is free a requirement in general or are you just avoiding giving Google specifically money? I've been happy with Proton but (1) they don't directly support the normal email protocols (because they don't play well with their encryption stuff, AIUI) and (2) using it with multiple users/a domain costs money. If neither of those is an issue for you, I'd recommend them.

@xpil I did this last year and went with option D. My provider is Migadu, and they are a perfect option for low volumes of email. It requires a moderate level of knowledge around configuring SMTP, IMAP, and DNS. (MX records, etc.)

@xpil Option B is likely to cause the most problems. C would be better, but don't expect to be able to email Microsoft users. For D, I've heard good things about Posteo, but have no direct experience.

@xpil D if you find a suitable provider, otherwise C. Running a mail server on a residential IP address is not going to go well.In case of running your own there will be a learning curve and some ongoing maintenance involved. If you get things wrong the big boys will block you. As a minimum you need to get your DNS and cert stuff right and be running IPv6, either native or dual stack. Once you have that running maintenance isn't too bad - mainly set your pkg manager to autoupdate.

@xpil I say C. Personally I've been running Wildduck on a VPS which works really well.Probably overkill for a single user, but I like it đŸ˜‚Running a mail server from home is a no-no, unless you go via a mail relay... which I also do, running my own mail relay on a VPS (MailScanner, with postfix, spamassassin, dovecot, OpenDKIM, etc. if you wanted to know)

@xpil I guess it just really depends on what you are looking for. I've been with Fastmail for almost 20 years and have never had any type of issue, their rate is fair, and there are no ads.
