I don't agree with the writer.I really like Gemini because when I click a gemini:// link, I can be sure that my browser isn't going to load a horrible modern website. At the end, the writer suggests that people who want this can make their own custom browser to do it, or configure one so it only loads the basic parts of websites.Okay, I can do that, but then I still have to work around the modern web to get the kind of content I want. That's not what I want to do. I want to have plaintext and paragraphs, and links to other plaintext and paragraphs. In the end, a Gemini link links to other "basic" gemini pages, and HTTP pages do not. The only way to get something like that is on Mastodon / sites like Mastodon where all of the content follows the same rules as far as how it looks, and even on Mastodon there's a high chance of clicking a link that leads to a modern website (you just can't click links if you want a consistent experience).Even if I did what the writer suggested, 9.9/10 pages I would try to load would be modern web pages that weren't designed to be viewed in a basic format, which would frustrate me and make me feel hopeless. On gemini, 10/10 links link to other basic internet documents that were designed to be viewed in a basic format. If the writer presented an alternative system where HTTP could be used, and 10/10 links would lead to basic plaintext and paragraph internet documents (with no chance of accidentally clicking a modern website link) then I would be more likely to agree with them.Even if the writer did present such a solution, I still would not agree with them because I believe that there should be multiple ways of viewing content on the internet. It shouldn't be "HTTP or nothing." There should always be at least a handful of alternatives so that people aren't locked in to using one they don't like.I disagree that everyone needs to be able to view internet content using the same protocol. If someone on Gemini thinks it's important that everyone can see a specifc internet document, they can put it on the HTTP internet. If they want their content to be viewed in a basic format alongside other basic internet documents, they can put it on Gemini. It's not that much of a hastle to download a Gemini client (there's one on iOS right now). For the most part, everything is hosted on the HTTP internet. I could see how this would be a problem if there were hundreds of different protocols and you needed a different program for each one (that would be a hastle). But downloading one client to have guaranteed access to basic internet documents is not a hastle.@strawberryfieldsforever@koyu.space#gemini #HTTP #web #internet

@thebiologist1117 @strawberryfieldsforever My experience with the web isn't near as bad as you're saying. The issue is predominantly with popular sites, and those can be repaired via proxying projects like Invidious, Scribe, & Nitter.I understand the desire for a protocol like Gemini guaranteed to not have all the same junk as the "modern" web, but personally like the top-of-thread blogpost I prefer trying to fix the web for everyone!

@strawberryfieldsforever THIS:"Ultimately, serving content solely via Gemini will only lead to it becoming less accessible and available to other people. Moving to Gemini is the opposite of inclusive, it’s exclusive. It’s a step in the wrong direction."Exactly. This seems true for a lot of "smol" web projects where essentially programmers and techies assume everyone else is a programmer, techie, server-operator too. Otherwise, these tools would have to be totally different to work out.

@z428 @strawberryfieldsforever why i don't get, is how hard is it to just use a gemini to http proxy?honestly i think most modern operating system should be able to automatically redirect to a proxy if there's no apps that can handle a link.

@z428 @strawberryfieldsforever plan9 has no problem opening links through proxies, plumber is more than expressive enough for that.why don't other operating systems do this by default? is it just because certain protocols aren't really popular enough?
