When I got into university, and my facutly gave me a shell account on the students server, that felt nice.But when I read that alumni get to keep their shell account forever, that was even better. It felt like it was more than just an educational institution. Like I was part of a "family" of sorts.Fast forward 6 years, I graduated, taught a lab for a year, gave up on it, and then they flipped course and decided that alumni no longer get a shell, only sftp.I feel cheated.

And it's a pain to copy my stuff from the server without a shell, since I can't tell how big the stuff is and which parts I need to copy and which I don't.

@tdemin no idea tbh. I probs could ask them but why bother. There are other things the faculty is doing to destroy everything I liked about it. I can't save it alone. I don't have the energy to try to save it, even if others wanted to help.

@wolf480pl well, getting a shell anywhere was rather big in early 2000's, but it's not a big deal anymore, and not even that useful, and they probably have some ToS you can't idle on irc there anyway

@wolf480pl tbh that, and Git over SSH, along with the way GnuPG signatures are handled, feels one of the most misdesigned features of Git.

@tdemin There are like 3 systems-programming-adjecent subjects that they're getting rid of because teaching them is too much effort, I can't teach them on my own.Advanced Operating Systems lab was taught by two people, one of whom would check all the assignments. He's a friend of mine. I've seen the burnout in his eyes.

@sjb I can't download a zip file of the source.I'm scp-ing whole git repos.Each with both a worktree and a .git directory.Also, this isn't about websites. It's about my past university assignments.
