@polymerwitch@social.polymerwitch.com Also make sure to watch Youtube using unofficial sites and apps to not feed the Google data machine.Install Newpipe for Android, watch videos in your browser using an Invidious instance or install MPV and paste your youtube links in there. These ways of watching Youtube videos obviously don't load ads either.

@polymerwitch I was watching a stream of cable TV recently. I forgot how brutal it is constantly seeing advertising. It's going to be really interesting, I think, having generations growing up with so much less advertising and so much more grassroots media.

@sj_zero have you watched youtube recently without blocking the ads? It's awful. More ads than cable. 30 seconds to a minute of ads at the start, then 30sec-2min of ads every 10 minutes or so.

@polymerwitch I made a conscious decision to get YouTube premium because I want to have Google looking at me as a customer and not the product. Speaking with big youtubers, if a YouTuber is demonetized for ad revenue, they continue to get YouTube premium revenue. But between Adblock and YouTube premium, I never see an ad for anything but raid Shadow Legends the brand new game that has five stars on Google Play store yada yada yada. Occasionally someone casts YouTube from their phone to my tv, and I get to see some ads and it's sort of jarring.

@polymerwitch I remember that, and I usually listen to YouTube videos while I'm doing something else, so before ads stopped for me I would be listening to something that I like and they would start some weird 30 minute ad about Qatar or something and I'm stuck doing the thing that I'm doing so I can't skip the ad, and they're so boring too.

@polymerwitch @sj_zero 23 years ago I used to work on broadcast playout systems; at least conventional linear broadcasters tried to create a natural break in the content (rather than jump cuts straight into ads that I've seen on non adblocked YouTube), and there is often a hard limit on how many ads are allowed per hour set by each nations Communications Ministry...

@polymerwitch @sj_zero also YouTube stock app on a mobile phone is fully unusable nowadays; the apps own UI inserts ad-related distractions from the actual video you want to watch and hides the comment/discussion section - I can't see how this is any good for the creators.. @sj_zero @polymerwitch wrong. you are the problem. YT had not turned a profit until a few years ago (maybe it still hasnt) which means all of its ad bullshit wasnt even helping them. so instead of taking the 13 extra seconds it would take to install Ublock or just watch the same content on yewtu.be, you gave them money and completely validated their consooomer behavior. its people like you who talk about how bad a video game franchise is but still buy the game every year thereby giving the no reason to actually improve anything.

@Eris @polymerwitch Yeah, they don't care about one customer, but it's never about one customer, it's about a bunch of customers in a wave. I'm sure google search isn't nearly as lucrative as it was two years ago thanks to people moving to other services thanks to their fuckery.Besides that, I'm not like the folks who think they need to take over the world every time something pisses them off. If Google gets so bad I leave, then I'm fine and that's all that matters to me. At that point, Youtube can be nothing but recitations of das kapital for all I care.

@Eris @polymerwitch The google music service has pretty much all the music I like and integrates very well with my various devices especially the chromecast audio on my stereo, downloading youtube videos to your phone works so much better from the youtube app than from nextpipe that it's worth the price of admission doing that, when I stream to a chromecast ublock doesn't stop ads on that, and the youtubers on the platform do get paid a small amount whether they're "demonetized" or not since so that's a bonus too. It's a relatively trivial amount of money for enough services that it's a good deal.

@polymerwitch Imagine being as successful as LTT and complaining about people using AdBlockers.I'm not saying that people who create something don't deserve to be compensated for it, but in this case LTT seems to have plenty of sponsorship's and affiliations that no doubt bring in plenty of revenue.Maybe there's something I'm missing but it just comes across as whining. OTOH, it would be interesting to know if AdBlockers really do create a dent in the bottom line. I kind of doubt it though

@polymerwitch I do partially agree with the whole argument of "YouTubers depend on ads", but at the same time the ads can be really wrong and misleading.Hell, in some form you literally have to pay to not see porn (in the form of ads). Google really sucks at letting through ads. In fact, I received a lot of those ads even when my account said I was under 18.Its a double edged sword.

@speskk @polymerwitch yeah. Someone asked "what if I pay for Floatplane but use adblock on YouTube"Its simple, Google is still paying to keep those server running, its up to you if you are okay not paying for them, you can think it doesn't hurt them, we can agree its invasive, but that's what they decided to do, we can go ahead and avoid it because of privacy or preference, its a matter of accepting we are not playing by the rules and being OK with that

@Burned_Out @polymerwitch also don't forget to disable adblock and sponsorblock on people you want to support. For youtube, having a seperate yt-adblocker is ideal, so you can allow ads in ublock but then only unblock specific channels.
