I'd like to port this question from birdsite as I'm pretty sure interesting answers will pop up here:"What would you say are the important *events* (things that happened, not in the “conference” sense) in the domain of #design in the past decade?" @entreprecariat I'd say the solidification of interaction design via "design components" and templated interactions embedded in tools such as figma. Also how silicon valley design principles became hegemonic worldwide. How about yours?

@entreprecariat Seemingly most of the world was convinced that an illuminated plastic rectangle and a centralized, transactional corporate governance system are the best way to organize humanity. The "smart phone" is the source of all structure and meaning in life.

@entreprecariat I actually don't at all want to name the smartphone but at a certain point Apple bought someone's multi touch technology. Owning a single touch Samsung Galaxy (the first one without the number) at the time. I can very well remember you couldn't really type a url or a message on it. People used blackberry and HTC/Nokia with keyboards for that. This multi touch display changed all of that and pretty quickly all phones had one large screen covering one side. This changed webdesign too

@entreprecariat But perhaps your question is more about something that you could pin to a certain moment or a particular day. And what is "past decade"? 2010-2020? 2012-2022?

@entreprecariat Google Fonts. It arguably made web fonts a mainstream thing. For better or worse, it revolutionized typography on the web.

@nolwennm many ppl indeed replied figma. Without thinking too much, this is what I replied: - the popularization of online marketplaces for freelancers (Fiverr was founded in 2010)- the release of P5.js- the launch of the Adobe Creative Cloud- the death of FFFFOUND!- variable fonts- https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com- brutalist websites

@rra @entreprecariat Yes! I was thinking of ember.js and angular both came out at the beginning of the decade and started the unending flow of new SPA JS "frameworks".

@entreprecariat oh damn, didn't realize that. I think maybe also CSS frameworks (like tailwindcss, but I have very little experience with that) and standardized ways to design UI/UX (material design and the other things from big tech) has probably also had some effect on making all websites look the same.

@rra @entreprecariat We could think about some more stylistic things: - gradients everywhere- silkscreen and dithering filters- chunky wonky display fonts (with giant slab serifs etc.)- Material Design (and general flatness)- anti-swiss layouts (crowded or close to page edges, unconventional font sizes, breaking out of colums)- 12 column CSS systems

@praxeology @rra i'd say mobile-first as a style, i.e. websites with simple layouts to save the time to design the responsive part

@entreprecariat Use LESS/SASS with tailwindcss framework to stylize the components inside your react app following the Material-UI framwork to send queries to your headless cloud CMS with netlify to render a static website on AWS server!!! web design is so much simpler now

@entreprecariat @praxeology @rra I actually already tried to find the exact date that @font-face with a src url become possible in most browsers. But I am pretty sure its before 2010.

@entreprecariat the mp4 file (1999) with a H.264 codec (2004) in a regular html video tag (2009-2010)but then the moment your computer was powerful enough to play a 720p video fullscreen on the background with generic white text of the marketing department over it.

@entreprecariat the death of the file. Not only in the sense of that article about young kids these days not knowing what a file is. But already halfway through that decade cloud services allowed for complete disregard of files, file size etc. Students adding 1GB attachments to email, 1080p 500mb videos in website, uncropped uncompressed full resolution photos in websites etc etc

@entreprecariat Material Design probably had the biggest impact. It is a very powerful and prescriptive framework, an auto-colonizer. It costrained the design discourse into choices of colors and typefaces, and a/b testing.
