People come around and say shit like "Oh if CLI/ Terminal / Linux is so good, why don't you prove it to me / convince me?"Fool, if you don't understand the value provided by these things, THEY ARE NOT FOR YOU. Don't act like we owe you an explanation when you haven't even bothered exploring them beyond a half-baked Google search.

@kzimmermann As a Debian user, I agree with them. I use Debian because it is the least bad option available, not because it is good. It is not good. If I want to use a desktop environment I am almost comfortable with, I need to control the screen brightness by typing hardware-specific numbers (separated by new lines) into a pipe. A single typo, and I have to disconnect and reconnect the pipe, which involves typing my admin password, often in public and on camera.

@kzimmermann The good thing about Linux, CLI and the terminal is that I can work around the design flaws, because the design flaws aren't fundamental enough to make the system unusable. (Most of the time.) I can only do that because I have good vision, and can derive and memorise long commands. There is no fundamental reason that Linux shouldn't be for everybody. “They are not for you” should not ever be true.$ sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

@wizzwizz4 but if we created a "Linux for Everybody," I fear we would end up with something as dumbed down and locked down as Windows. And no, not even Mint/Ubuntu is as "for everybody" as Windows in this sense.I'd much rather Linux and other Free Software divided into layers of "required experience," where you have the choice of staying in your comfort zone or learning more to obtain more power.Still, I feel sorry that you have to be under surveillance so much during your day. Good luck!

@kzimmermann An experiment, if you have time: try to get a screen reader running on Linux. (The most popular one is called Orca.)I'd suggest the “turn off your screen and use the computer without it” experiment too, but I doubt you'll get that far.

@wizzwizz4 I tried Adriane (I think that's what's called the one that came with KNOPPIX ) a few times and it seemed to work alright, reading stuff off the screen even in GUI programs. But yup, never went into using the computer completely blind. I heard it's pretty brutal, regardless of the platform.

@kzimmermann Could you tell me more, please? I wasn't aware that Adriane supported many programs (though I can't find much documentation about it).
