I just decided that I'll move away from Spotify and download the music again instead. This is mainly because of financial reasons, I used a tool called "spotdl" to download my entire Spotify Library and it feels amazing because it filled out ALL the metadata which is just... WOW I love that!

@kzimmermann I have to give credit to my girlfriend for this, even though she doesn't care about owning your files or stuff like that, she does care about me wasting my money and she always kinda shamed me for paying $10 per month for music. But either way, it does feel good to be back :D One thing I do miss.. are recommendations for new music.

@metalune @kzimmermann i still use Spotify exactly for releases and recommendations.Still have my local files for regular listening. Syncing to mobile phone is done via own Nextcloud. Music is bought by online stores of bands and 2nd hand local stores.

@daniels @joel @SonoMichele it pulls the actual audio from YouTube but it fills it out with the metadata from Spotify

@metalune @kzimmermann Why would you be shamed for paying $10 a month for access to all the music in the world. It's one of the bargains of the century. Is she extremely frugal?

@ikt @kzimmermann well... it's not necessary that's what she's saying. I mean considering that I didn't pay for it before and also got along she kinda had a point didn't she

@metalune Ah if you've only recently started I can see what she's saying. I was desperate for something like Spotify because I listen to music all day every day, I don't watch tv so $15 a month for Netflix/Amazon etc would be a waste. I am always on the lookout for new music (new or old) and yeah, you can see when Spotify became available in my country so for me it's super cheap and easily the best value product I buy every month:

@ikt I agree pretty much the same is true for me but I think 10€ per month is still way too much

@metalune 10 euro is about 15 aud, for some reason it's cheaper here, but you can see what I spent on lunch (ww metro) and dinner (greenstreat) it's practically nothing to me :BlobCatGoogly:

@metalune @kzimmermann Artists have to pay bills too :\ I respectfully disagree with your gf on multiple levels as I find music an essential part of life. I feel it's not really fair to view spending money on music as pointless. Secondarily, from an ethical standpoint, downloading music without paying anything doesn't hold well. I agree that 10 euros per month can be a burden for a lot of people, but if you can bring some people in there is Spotify Family, that cuts that cost dramatically.

@kriive @kzimmermann oh she's not against paying for music, but she's against paying that $10 fee every month. I'll happily pay for the music I want on something like the iTunes Store and then just keep it as an mp3 file forever. She herself listens to music on YouTube, which isn't a problem for her because she only really listens to music at home, that way the artists get paid as well since she's listening at their own source and they chose how to monetise that
