I decided to talk about #messaging services and do a little overview over the ones I've used in the past, for #privacy and such, I kinda focused a bit more on #briar, since I was testing it today and was pleasantly surprised with it.Please let me know what you thinkThis is day 93 of #100DaysToOffload https://joelchrono12.ml/blog/private-messaging/

@joel I haven't put enough effort into looking at different messaging services... I feel so tied to Discord. 💀 A lot of the alternatives just feel so lacking. Especially considering how I use it with my friends and the different communities that I'm a part of. :/

@joel Nice summaries! Sounds like I'm in a similar boat as you. I would try harder to get all my personal contacts to use Signal, but I already convinced them all to use Telegram a couple years back. At least it's still better than Groupme...Briar sounds super interesting. I might have to check it out soon.

@joel I love Briar. I want to use it as a chat app for the entire member of my family. Well, unsuccessful so far, but it is another story.Briar is so lovely:1. Meet people in person to share our ID2. In time of emergency, just simply delete the app. The entire accounts, chats, etc will be deleted as well3. No need to register with phone, email or other identitiesUnfortunately, it does not support voice and video call.#briar #messenger

@joel I wasn't too keen on Signal messing with crypto either, but then I found out a little more about Mobilecoin, their chosen partner, and could see the rationale. MC has an excellent podcast called Privacy is the New Celebrity. Also Isis Agora Lovecruft works for both companies. Basically, Signal is lowest barrier for switching from WA, so my choice for 'turning' family and friends, who all have my number anyway.

@joel Nice roundup. I have briar but have found few people to use it with.Managed to move some people to Signal but who knows how long that will be worth using.Status is another one I tried out of curiosity but that's built on Etherum, so not for fans of crypto.I would like to start focusing on Matrix, but haven't found a CLI client I like enough to feel comfortable with, and I should really get back on XMPP.

@joel The problem I have with messaging and private apps is that it's hard to keep a local copy of these messages. I discussed it here: https://helpdeskheadesk.net/help-desk-head-desk/2020-12-28/In general, the issue is that your messages are safely stored somewhere encrypted, and no one, not even you, can get a copy of them. Yes sure, you can see your messages and you get to back up your stuff - but you don't have another form of backup. In Singal's case, if you have a different phone number, you're done for.
