Well, after all that drama I figured out how to have it both ways. There are two new MRF policies: ForceMentionsInContent and InlineQuotePolicy. If Soapbox servers update to the latest commits and turn these on, it will restore compatibility with old clients. The reason I didn’t do this before was because I didn’t know how.

@alex wouldn't it make more sense to make the default be leave the quotes automatically in the reply box when you start a reply and have an MRF that cleans those up the way you want it to look?

@alex It was a spergier road than it had to be but at least nobody will have a technical reason to be mad anymore.

I thought about this since the drama and probably there is no "non-breaking" solution.Best compromise would be keep running the replies in the text for a while until the rest improve to a "we show them next to the text but it's another field in another div LOL".I think this change accomplishes that.

Yeah basically it puts span tags in the content that can be easily hidden. The client is responsible for hiding them. This means it also fixes client compatibility on your own server. It wasn’t until seeing how Fedibird does it that it clicked.

@alex the replies never were the actual issue.... they were what made the issue glaringly apparent however

@MechaSilvio @dielan I’ve briefly turned it on to demonstrate. You should see mentions on your end. I don’t.

@Hyolobrika @dielan @alex @MechaSilvio @sim This is nice, but it doesn't prevent a dictator from forcing other code through. Forking still required.

@Hyolobrika @dielan @alex @MechaSilvio Saying we can stop worrying now is a bit presumptuous. While I am happy there is a solution fix now, how does this prevent something like this happening again in the future? How do you expect my trust in the devs to be restored, especially knowing that I am not the audience and this has been apparent? I'm tired of devs taking advantage and expecting us to put up with whatever they come up with next then insulting us when we complain. There is a limit to that and I have endured a lot for years despite the fact that this is not what I wanted from my experience of fedi, as someone who came over from twitter and needed something different.

@inference @Hyolobrika @MechaSilvio @alex @dielan Yes, it doesn't fix the issue that this has made apparent to us. It doesn't solve what you mentioned, it doesn't solve the communication issue between devs and between admins and users. This is not the first time that the fediverse has had to deal with this, it is a pattern now. I'm tired of lead devs being dismissive towards others and driving people away from the project.

@alex @Hyolobrika @dielan @sim idk, I think this is exciting times. They probably had a lot of beefs back in the 80's and 90's when making those RFCs about every protocol. There will be friction and fights and drama, and it's unavoidable for an open project that's growing

@MechaSilvio @Hyolobrika @alex @dielan I have wondered if this is just the people problem. I'm not sure if there is a good solution to it. So we get the friction, fights and drama. Also, it's funny to think of a 10+ project growing, but then I remember that we have since had a few different younger implementations that are still catching up with what was here before.
