@Debradelai @Bob_H This is one regulation I happen to be in favor of - mainly because it deregulates THEIR private regulation of what we, as consumers, can and cannot do with products we supposedly own, and should be able to maintain or dispose of as we'd like. Apple and others routinely sabotaging older phones, computers and other products (a matter of record), often through updates, to "encourage" upgrades is something for which I think some figurative corporate hands should be cut off.

Maybe it’s warranted here? If I buy a product from a company, am I to be compelled to buy all services and replacement parts for it from that company alone? In many cases, I’ve been able to repair or modify things I bought through a third party. I think that’s a perfectly reasonable thing to do, and consumers have always been able to do this. Some companies seem to want to stop this practice.

@StevenDouglas @Debradelai I have an old iPad and an old MacBook that are still functional, except that the software updates for them are no longer supported. I don’t mind if they stop updating the software, but when they update the software such that it makes the old hardware unusable, well…that seems oppressive. I’ve relegated the old iPad and MacBook to very simple uses, but the iPad can’t even open certain websites anymore.

@StevenDouglas @Debradelai @Bob_HOh, come ON. Windows does the exact same thing. So do car manufacturers. How about the Alabama farmer suing John Deere? There are SO many examples of companies that make products with baked-in-the-cake restrictions on who can fix them and design them to ensure that ONLY proprietary parts to fix them when something goes wrong. If BIDEN is suggesting legislation to fix this, I want to look under the hood.
