@SirSpencer Used to be a great business for photography. Worked in the wedding industry for over 10 years. The phones made people more impatient and people seem less willing to invest in photography when they come in thinking they can just get phone photos anyway. @unhappynewyork and I don't usually watch reality shows but Marriage or Mortgage is a great look at this particular question and what people are thinking when they invest or splurge rather.

Extra gross when poor people like me do it.If you're banking 400k+ every year plus extra in the markets and you just got it like that, it's a little different story in all fairness. I have a perspective on seeing how the decisions have played out on the day of. The location often has the most influence on everyone's experience regardless of weather. The bride and groom are often so socially taxed they don't really eat that much and probably drink too much.

@SirSpencer We got married (nearly 11 years ago) for under $2,000, not including the rings.We had a small ceremony (his parents, my mom, my brother & his wife) at a "vegas style chapel" (not in Vegas). I wore a wedding dress, my spouse wore a nice suit that he already had for interviews, all he needed to buy was a new tie. Our wedding dinner was similarly small, reservations at a nice restaurant, everyone got to order what they wanted and everyone liked the food.

We got to the courthouse around 1 pm, did the paperwork, walked a couple of blocks to the nearest chapel, and got the "signature ceremony". The little Arab guy tried hard to upsell, but we didn't figure we'd be any more married if Elvis said the "do you take" lines. Whole thing was maybe $100. Then he bought me a house. 🥰

I had been recruited to run a coffee company in Honolulu so we stopped off in Kauai for a couple of days and hired a guy to livestream the service so our friends and family could observe. So, it was probably the least expensive way to get married in Hawaii. Other than a couple of hotel nights and the diverted flights.It was absolutely fantastic! I got to marry dream girl without the headache of family politics.

I don't think it cost much, if anything though. We didn't do cake, it was a pot luck from family and family friends who wanted to contribute. So I bought invitations and several gallons of lemonade and iced tea (Arnold Palmer bar). Groomsmen wore the same color tie.. they were ~$10 each.

@SirSpencer i ended uo making some good decisions in my career so we went to the Caribbean for our 10yr anniversary/honeymoon. I also bought her a new ring that costs me a lot more than that original that she still loves. Its not what you spend. @SirSpencer I just looked at some of the pictures. I'm not sure how much the inlaws spent on sunflowers, but a lot of the other stuff was repurposed from things her mom already owned and it turned out perfect.Also, at the time we had a professional photographer as a friend who did our pictures for free (as a favor). So beyond the frugality of it, I think it's important to highlight how lucky we were to have so much support.

@SirSpencer we just got married this summer Backyard barbecue for about 60 people for a few thousand bucks. It was really fun and it reflected who we are: not rich people. I think the parents poke their noses in and escalate things, I know ours tried to and we are pushing middle age!

@SirSpencer 100% agree with you. Honestly I think it made it more special. Seems like the people who spend all that money tend to become "bride/groomzillas" and damage all their relationships whereas this was more special since everyone worked together on it.

@HardCordelia that's a fun one, sounds magical!I think the biggest thing I'm concerned with is authenticity and value rather than the actual number spent. As long as you're getting value from your money, the budget is within your means and not robbing from your future, and the ceremony reflects who you are like you so beautifully put it, then that's what I think of as good magic for a wedding ceremony!

You're spot on about the middle class people –well, the brides and their mothers mostly (the grooms don't really have a say, and dads are there to pick up the tab)– who are investing massive amounts of money (relative to their income) to be a 'princess' for a day in their own fairytale wedding.Why are they so obsessed with pricey princess weddings, who knows, culture, marketing, etc.

My friends went crazy for a few year over it and now of our friendships survived long after "the big day".at the time i was amazed at the $$$ for 1 day after a year of stress and photos no one looks at versus a house deposit or investment portfolio or even taking the year off to travel the world.Its all personal preference though. We've been trying to elope for 2 years, got the clothes the rings a nice dinner with a coyple of friends and a nice holiday for about $6k Aussie Dollaridoos... but Chairman Dan broke our plans in 2020 and 2021. We're on the move out of shithole Victoria permanently and don't even want to pay Scam Andrew the marriage licence fee

@SirSpencer I had a bbq business at one point, we catered a wedding and we cooked a whole pig per request of bride and groom. later found out the groom was Jewish and they did the whole smash the glass and carry the people around on chairs......but we cooked a whole hog...for the Jews. AND THEY LOVED IT!! So the saying after that event was "we cook pulled pork so good even the Jews love it!"true story. I charged $10k for that wedding. just the food and service

@SirSpencer I went to a wedding in the 90's. My friends weren't rich, they were young, they rented the local village hall, and we had a "bring your own" feast and party. Every one brought food and drinks, one of their friends was a DJ and put on music and lighting. They saved loads of money, and put that toward a house. It was very enjoyable and memorable. They did not want to start their lives with wedding debt.

@PhoneBoy @SirSpencer my divorce put me from comfortably middle class to paycheck to paycheck (albeit salaried), and I still resent that, but the independence of having my own place, more freedom to do whatever the fuck I want including parenting style makes it all worth it. Bad fucking investment absolutely, but I'd rather scrape together a worthwhile life that's my own than have that life again.
