would ActivityPub actually work with interplanetary latency? it seems unlikely.

@izaya follow requests would be painful, usenet would uinironically be a better model.

@izaya@social.shadowkat.net works with misskey, a forever evolving, interplanetary microblogging platform. :blobcatgiggle2:

@puniko are you sure? have you tested with a 40-minute latency?this is a serious question

@puniko something like fedi may work nearly as well as usenet or similar for that usecase but I imagine not over TCP/TLS when establishing a connection would take several hoursprobably something more along the lines of fedi over UUCP

@izaya I suspect the only protocol that can handle interplanetary latency is UUCP (UNIX to UNIX copy).

@izaya@social.shadowkat.net i think AP itself would work. problem might be handling timeouts

@starbreaker IPFS is designed or it - it's even in the name - but it's not really designed for communication as much as just file storage/retrieval

@izaya @starbreaker quite an unstable one. Have got zero positive emotions after working with IPFS.

@izaya I've heard of IPFS, but I think UUCP might work better for daily or weekly batch transmissions of mail, vids, audios, and data. Since it was originally made for dialup, I figure it's a reasonable protocol to use for interplanetary transmissions.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UUCP

@starbreaker yeah I've red about it if never used itFidonet or similar may be interesting, too. There's a book, called A Fire Upon the Deep, with sections between chapters of exchanges over interstellar usenet.

@a1ba @izaya I don't have a lot of positive emotions about tech in general. That's what I get for doing this shit for a living.

@izaya I've read Vernor Vinge. :)Fidonet would fit, too; I guess it's the BBS equivalent of UUCP.
