I was looking at my PS2 games (which I downloaded from "totally and absolutely legit" sites and play on an emulator), and found out I have PES2017... for the PS2.Turns out that it was some brazilian hack of another previous PES game with updated rosters for each team. They even did a voice cover to have the names of the players in the comentary. They even added some weird keygen music to the main menu and everything.I was thinking to myself like "you have to understand, Enigmatico. This people does not have access to more modern videogame systems, so this has to do".But then I realized that it is 2022, prices of CPUs and GPUs are going to the moon, and eventually everyone will have to resort to old console systems and games because there is no money anymore for a brand new PS5, Xbox or a $600 GPU to play mid entry games (+$300 for a mid-high range CPU).Time to learn Portuguese I guess? :shrugz:

To be fair a lot of these old games are still fun. Like I could play FIFA 2000 any time. In fact, I'd rather play FIFA 2000 than any of the modern ones. And you could just upgrade the roosters and have them updated any time.Charging $60 every year just for a "new" game, which is the same as the previous one but with some changes in the roosters and some minor upgrades to the engine (mostly graphical upgrades and maybe a few physics upgrades that nobody care about) really sucks, you know...

@enigmatico That's the nice part of free software. The community can just add new content and features.

@LunaDragofelis Yeah, well... of course you could make open source games. But for simulators, licenses are a thing so don't expect an open source football simulator (or any sport simulator, really) with real teams and players. The project will get sued for sure.

@enigmatico maybe the open source part would be just the game engine and code, with the licensed parts sold as DLC (or distributed as unofficial packages)

@LunaDragofelis Well, yeah. Anyone could also "smuggle" content without a license. But here in Spain there is this company called "La Liga", which is the company that manages all this stuff in Spain, and they are the literal mafia. If you saw how much money they invested into technology to detect and shutdown pirate broadcasts of their footbal matches, you'd be really suprised. If only they invested that money and effort into other stuff the world would be much better for sure.So if you did that, you could expect someone knocking at your door at some point :meowGiggle: .

@enigmatico@fedi.absturztau.be I feel like thats the real reason that hack was made. Not that they can't get a new console and game, but simply the fact that you're paying $60 for the same damn game with an updated roster.

@shadowferret Brazilian people don't have access to modern stuff (except for the rich, of course). So they usually play with old hardware. So it's common to see brazilian hacks around the internet like this one.

@enigmatico @shadowferret there's the added bonus that the PS2 is easily modchippable, something that the PS3 and later do not have.

@cell @shadowferret The later were jailbroken anyways so you can play backups of games and homebrew without the need of a modchip.
