i read 'Preface to 1997 Edition' of Sheila Jeffrey's 'The Spinster and Her Enemies', and i noticed something about the women that were discussed.Janice Raymond and Sheila Jeffrey were involved in rape crisis centers and anti-trafficking organizations, but Gayle Rubin and Mary Hunt, libfems who called the former two things such as "anti-sex" and "exclusionary," seemed to have no such involvement in these types of organizations. instead, they spent their time in BDSM clubs, promoting porn as "empowering" and the like.there's something about working in the VAWG sector that tends to make women radfems.

libfems, on the other hand, seem to distance themselves in one way or another from VAWG.

liberal feminism can be traced back to the 1980s, if not earlier. i've wondered before about liberal feminism, how it came to be, and what makes a woman into a libfem.

Liberal feminism: High feel good factor, low emotional labour, low value.Radical feminism: Low feel good factor, high emotional labour, high value.Add in that the 80s were when all that narrative about instant gratification was starting to be a more mainstream thing, which fits nicely with the liberal feminist dynamic.I could be wrong. I’m sure @grace_hawthorn knows. Grace always knows.

i think this is right, and i also think there was something about the late 80s, early 90s particularly which was, in the Thatcher-Reagan axis, all about the destruction of a structural analysis and the rise of liberalism through post-structuralism, post-modernism and the very neo-liberal "project of the self". I don't think we can underestimate that - it did for unions (class - extended narratives of self-made entrepreneurialism), it did for feminism (adapt your own self, Girl Power, sisters doing it for themselves), and it did for anti-racist work. This, that we have now, is the endpoint of that i think, and it's been a Hecurlean effort to sustain the value and relevance of a structural analysis. And basically it's been nurtured and protected in MVAWG services, bec there's no way to think your way out of that.

it's scary that the TQ+ propaganda is infiltrating MVAWG services. i was just talking about this article with other radfems yesterday.https://gal-dem.com/transphobia-in-sexual-violence-services/we were mostly laughing about the article saying there's this supposed "cabal" of all powerful feminists, but it does make me wonder, why are there women working in shelters pushing for those shelters to be "trans inclusive"? maybe they're new to MVAWG services and took their gender ideology with them... i don't know.

You’d think people that work with women that have experienced SA would realize that the penis was used as a weapon against them but I guess not.

Oh lord I just got to the part where they start blaming “whiteness” for VAWG organizations’ focus on women and girls

Oh HELL YES to the impact of neoliberalism on class analysis. Centre everything on the individual and class analysis flies out the window.Add in the 80-100 year cycle as well and you have that whole thing of people who know what it was like without the benefits derived from good structural/class based analysis are starting to die off and so you see the same dynamic start to reassert itself again.

very much so. that was absolutely seismic, the collapse of the Soviet Union, it took so much down with it. and totally - one of the things i've found ironic about the pandemic is that the people who are so virulently "fuck it, fuck them, get on it with, no restrictions, we want our lives back" are almost a perfect circle with the people who watch a lot of history channel things about the Blitz and think they'd have been really good at it. What i really want to to say to them is "no-one knew, at the beginning, it was going to be 6 years. they didn't. and 2 years in, they were exhausted and ruined and no longer recognised the world, and traumatised. Guess what?"

i think it's a really really hard thing to communicate quite how massive the end of the Cold War was, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Basically that became the lever for free market capitalism to claim the 'win' and for socialism to be roundly denounced for the next 2 decades. It was a seismic shift in worldviews and we haven't recovered from it.
