I agree. Most mainstream media in general is dogshit and doesn’t merit payment. I actually pay quite a bit out for media. Patreon-type things, including things on a similar business model such as Sam Hyde’s Gumroad. I’m not afraid of paying for media. I give him money because I want him to win at life. I’ve got some other people I do the same with, some “premium” blogs I pay into. I’d pay for a service to the effect of Netflix if their content was worth watching.But I also don’t take IP law very seriously. And I think any expectation that I do is actually really funny.

Demanding people pay 19.99 to watch The Little Mermaid is as ridiculous as demanding people pay 1.99 to learn their own national anthem.Treating advertisement as a proper way to pay is similarly ridiculous. More people in your society are poor than not. You are asking your society to be controlled from the bottom up by *idiots,* who're easily swayed by what they hear their favorite radio and you tube presenters say for pay, rather than actual worthwhile works. How do you think your society decayed to this point in the first place? The same psychologists who decided that you must be lead like an ox to 'do the right thing for the greater good' wrote the radio adds that told you smoking would liberate you from male oppression.

I had this on a t-shirt for a while when I was in college. I wrote the invitation system for one private tracker program and have a pretty good understanding of the protocol overall, so I did a lecture on behalf of my Network Programming professor for this reason. Up to some point in the last century the only way to transmit complex, lengthy information to hundreds of people was the printing press. Publishers existed because they were the only way to distribute that information, a very valid reason for existence.Nowadays those publishers are useless, they fulfill absolutely no purpose. They are totally replaced by arxiv, or equivalents, it is an entire industry replaced by a fancy file server. The thing becomes somehow worse if you realize who is paying for. The public funds institutions which create information, this information is then sold to some """publisher""" who locks that information behind a paywal (basically inaccessible for the people who payed for it) and "offers" the contents of the paywal again to the institutions, where it is bought with the money of the public. The whole thing is absolutely ridiculous.Even if my university offers some papers to me, I make sure to use scihub every time. Just because it makes the right people absolutely seethe.

There were libraries that destroyed the original copies of their ancient books and manuscripts, when they assumed that Google would just take care of it for them. There are, to this day, libraries that are destroying paper copy books, including only copies, because they are assuming digital copies (DRM locked) will persist. The consequence is that the books are not copied, and any book not copied every 2-3 generations is lost forever, and no longer meaningfully contributes to human civilization

E.g. numbers of residencies with access to internet, total number of mobile plan users and certainly much more.At the same time you can do extrapolation, even if you lack data from certain areas, e.g. by comparing total internet traffic from a region.I don't think anybody claims these numbers are totally accurate, but, unless someone was really stupid, they should be within a few percentage points of the true result.

I can think of a reason, it's the only historical event where they throw 80 year old grandmothers in jail for saying it didn't happen.
