I've found now a few places discussing whether the classic `cp` command is outdated and preference should be given to #rsync even for a small number of (or individual) files. Ex:https://askubuntu.com/questions/17275https://stackoverflow.com/questions/6339287/Yet, either I'm hardwired to using cp already (one of the first commands I learned, after all) or I think using rsync all the time sounds a little overkill. It does have a progress bar, though, which is nice. What is the consensus here?#askfedi

@kzimmermann I rsync anything more than a few MB. But that's for convenience with progress indicator and re-sync-ability.Seems a bit extreme to rsync 1KB text files.

@rune seems like a good strategy! I was a little surprised to see the guy straight up aliasing cp to use rsync, though.I'm curious about this "re-sync-ability," is it the ability to "restore from mid-way" a file that only was partly copied?

@kzimmermann On the other hand, what you do with a progress bar when the whole thing depends on the I/O of the system and disk(s). To be sure it is not dead during working, just pass -v to see whats going on. Sync folders is another topic.

@kzimmermann rsync handles checksums pretty well so whether I think I might get disconnected or if I just might copy all the files over again it feels like a safer and faster option.Individual files only get resumed if you use the correct argument IIRC, but if you have many files then it's more about not having to copy those files again.

@kzimmermann cp is still a neat little program. The OpenBSD version is very minimal, only 480 LoC. I do like GNU cp's no clobber feature though, -nhttps://github.com/openbsd/src/blob/master/bin/cp/cp.c
