I need to give some backstory for this passage. So for those who don’t know, Sultans basically had a favorite concubine who became the Sultana if she bore him a son. You weren’t supposed to marry them, but Suleiman broke that rule with Roxlana. Anyway, the Sultan would usually try to have other sons with other concubines to make some spares so sultans basically never have full blooded brothers but half-brothers. The Sultana, especially when she became Queen Mother, wielded a lot of influence in the harem and over her sultan son. Normally the first born was groomed for succession but this was never a sure thing. Bayezid beat out older and favored Cem by consolidating the janissaries and his son Selim beat out his older brothers through guile and deposing even his own father. Often the half-brothers had to be dealt with, the traditional way was strangulation.So come to Mahomet III. His father Murad had originally only had him and was content. But Murad’s mother and sister bullied him into sleeping with more concubines just in case something happened to Mahomet. Murad was impotent though. Unironically he just wanted to play with miniatures; he already had his heir. So they made some medieval Viagra that really messed him up and he fathered nearly 100 more children, at least 19 of whom were boys.So Murad dies, Mahomet takes power, and his mother now bullies him into dealing with his half-brothers who are literally just children. What does he do? Gathers them together, assures them they’re only going to be circumcised (the Ottomans actually had circumcision festivals), but then had the deaf-mute slaves (who are made that way by ripping out their tongues and piercing their ear drums) then strangle all 19 children to death.I hate the Ottoman Empire so much it’s unreal.
