Well, then it's a good thing I'm not saying that. I'm sure there's a million things people do to look more attractive to the opposite sex and that's fine. Yet when we look for another person, what are we actually looking at? Personally, I don't take out a calculator and add up pros (hours spent in gym) and cons (weird haircut). Instead, we all convey an impression to others. And we either like that impression or we don't. It's something primal, based on an instinct. What I am saying is that this instinct is looking for something equally primal. You can call it genetics, human spirit, soul or a mixture between all of them. We manifest something in the world, something coming from deep within us. That manifestation includes physical, mental and spiritual aspects. Nobody's talking about pulling out a calculator and trying to empirically measure others and there's plenty of people that can just fake "who they are". I've done it. Eventually faking it becomes part of you. It's called "growth". The impression we give of ourselves is mostly based on features that can be changed or improved: Fitness, grooming/cleanliness, level of knowledge, mannerisms and social skills, etc. The only parts of it that aren't naturally changeable are things like race, hair color, genetic diseases or deformities, etc. and they have nothing to do with the initial scenario being presented.

I do think that skills not being passed down is a problem, it's also difficult to build your own house if you don't have the money and paperwork. But you can still learn to be handy in other ways. People just need an excuse to try different things. If you don't own your own house, you are less likely to take on handy projects with it but this is something that you can teach yourself when you do. Likewise for any other skills when it comes to looking after a house or family. You typically learn as you go.I think this is the problem we have. We expect people to know how to do certain things when the conditions weren't right for them to pick it up. That is something that happens with maturity, when you are in a relationship and have a family, when you settle down and learn responsibility. But I think this process needs to start earlier than it does now, it shouldn't wait for the 30s... it needs to start early 20s. But society teaches you that you need the right conditions first so you might as well have some fun while you wait for the right conditions. On saying all this, I'm not sure that everyone is able to learn these life skills so you have to be able to discern who is and is willing to do so. Not that this advice matters for Leyonhjelm who has found somebody anyway.

@TinyFern @leyonhjelm Yeah, it is unfortunate that this happens now. I think it is worth pointing out that biology is on your side. Just as children defer to their parents, I do think that women will defer to men on decisions they are unsure about. Until they learn that the men in their lives can't be trusted and then you get what happens now with a society full of women who feel not just jaded but that they must make those life decisions for themselves, that they must protect themselves because the men around them sure as hell aren't and don't have their interests at heart. Their fathers may have also taught them this lesson. Society teaches women that they are individuals, that they must do as men do by going out to put bread on the table and pay for the economy. What is that teaching women now? I think that something similar is happening to men because they get the same message from society. They may not be in a secure family so they get bad messages from their own mother. Fathers tend to be around less for a variety of reasons. Then what do they learn from the women around them? That women can't be trusted, that they need to detach themselves from women in order to protect themselves and do everything for themselves. That they have to wait for the right conditions so they might as well have fun, maybe sleep around because settling down isn't worth it. Or maybe do their own thing, like self-improvement until the tides in the dating market have changed. Then the cycle repeats itself for a whole new generation, because women learn from these men that men can't be trusted. This is why I think community is so important. It pulls us out of ourselves, gives us a sense of responsibility. When we enter a relationship, it's not just about ourselves and our needs. There is someone else that has needs we need to address. It should become we, not a competition between two individuals. Likewise, community creates that concept of we rather than living around strangers. Through community we learn how to trust each other. In a low-trust society, this is very difficult to have and we suffer for it greatly.

@leyonhjelm @TinyFern I think you are right. What you are left with is something that is more likely to tear men and women a part because that is the money incentive for those involved in the courts. Seeing the divorce numbers and how little support there is for the family unit within the institution is not promising, more likely to leave people with less confidence in marriage. It is a farce. We have weakened all our institutions now, with the arrogance that we know better than tradition and that society doesn't need it anyway.

@PrestonBrooks @TinyFern @leyonhjelm I used to not understand where this self-centred critique came from. But since being in my current relationship, I think I get it. A lot of people still live their lives where it is all about them and their needs/wants. But a long-term marriage that is successful requires that you think about your wife/husband and children. It's actually a beautiful and great thing to be reminded that there is somebody else there. Even better when you can contemplate how beautiful that is together. Realising that it isn't just about yourself helps us to grow and mature.

I think it took me a while to figure out relationships but I've always been the type that wanted just one committed marriage for the rest of my life and all that entails. We want to make our fantasies a reality, we want to act on them. Without realising that doing this is harming our relationships. I think it is important to discern fantasy and reality, to have a boundary that is drawn and never crossed. Instead we are taught that we don't have boundaries, that we must act on these whims and fantasies we have. That we must do this for others that we become entangled with. Even if it is to our detriment.

@leyonhjelm @PrestonBrooks @TinyFern Yeah. There is definitely something about porn that erases our boundaries and invites us to act out our fantasies. I've also felt this pressure to sleep around, as if it is a way to experiment when it comes to sex. To be more open in my relationships or else I'm extreme and bad in some way. Those ideas do float around. But this usually comes from people that treat sex more casually and want open relationships. This is the erasing of tradition and of personal boundaries.

Yeah, unless you're a literal 4'11 manlet or have some sort of crazy deformity, being in decent shape, having a good job, and presenting an image of generally having your shit together will get you pretty far. Women almost exclusively want to date up when it comes to status and income, and that's something largely under a guy's control.Tinder and other hookup apps are completely different though, women care about status in potential long-term relationships, BPD hoes looking for their attention fix are just going to zero in on the most attractive profile picture.
