An open source developer pushed an update removing all functionality and deleted their project from GitHub (going so far as to use git push --force to purge the Git commit tree).GitHub and Microsoft used this library internally so they reversed the changes and banned them from GitHub for deleting their project. The issue here is GitHub said you are not allowed to delete your project.https://twitter.com/marak/status/1479200803948830724

@me you can't force other people not to host or use your open source software.

@me I'm curious to know how exactly they broke the TOS... This is sad though.

@ikonoklast @me but that's not the point. It is that they took over his project and changed its content

@Fkrauss @me Yes, i do feel like they could have solved it less dirty but i guess the way they did it was the fastest solution

@ikonoklast @me i guess trolling the policy was easier than git clone and changing all their code that referenced the original repo 🤣

@Fkrauss @ikonoklast This impacts peoples trust in the GitHub platform, if once a project inconviences Microsoft they pull out the TOS card and then start over projects it impacts the FOSS community's trust of GitHub, I've avoided them ever since the Microsoft takeover but this makes me want to use them even less given what's going on.

@me @ikonoklast @Fkrauss Did not know gitea is federated. Have been using rsync.net’s excellent support for git for private (like /etc) and not ready to show to the world work, am slowly setting up my own $20/year VPS will make gitea a priority. Thanks!

@me @Fkrauss I wish. People don't give a damn as long as their own work on github is not impacted. I don't really blame them but still..

@ikonoklast @Fkrauss I'm certainly not going to trust GitHub with any of my projects, working to get my remaining shit off of Microsoft Azure too.
