If you don't find working on free software to be intrinsically rewarding.. don't. If you claim that you owe nothing to anyone, I will point out that neither does anyone owe anything to you.

Furthermore, why do you feel entitled to payment when your best-known contribution is a trivial Node library that does little more than wrap the ANSI escape sequences? I certainly wouldn't pay money for that.

The folks in the Javascript community are funny. If you have a problem with corporate users, don't license your code as MIT.

For transparency, I'll disclose that I've been financially compensated (through GSoC as well as my current employer) for my contributions to free software. It would be great if more folk could be compensated, but my point still stands: if you're not doing this for your own enjoyment, you're doing it for the wrong reason.

@jakob Conversely, if you're a big business, maybe you should think twice about relying on software which is maintained by people for their own enjoyment.Personally, I don't see how "free software" is necessarily equivalent to "hobby software". If your business depends on something, it makes sense to pay someone to work on it ; and in many cases, if you're paying someone to work on software, it makes more sense to "free" that software than to keep it proprietary.

I'm skeptical that this stunt was done in good faith when the developer in question has the means to trade relatively large sums of cryptocurrency.

Anyway, good luck seeking financial contributions for anything in the software field when everyone remembers you as purposefully bricking their software.

@publius Certainly an important point to make. Most licenses do come with a "no warranty" clause, after all. Bringing on any dependency is a risk, but especially so for one without an accountable party.w.r.t the second point, I think I should have been more clear. I don't take issue with governance, but rather an attitude re: the act of contributing. If you aren't employed to maintain free software, working on it is volunteer work. Like spending time in a soup kitchen.
