Installing an adblocker is the gateway drug into anti-consumerism, which is in turn the gateway drug into anti-capitalism. Tell all your friends how to install adblockers.

@schratzeYou're stealing your attention that you must pay to an advertising. Advertising is a way of converting attention into money.

@Camel simply not giving a thing is not stealing it.There are only very few services where you're forced to watch an ad before accessing the service/content. Mostly it's just interspersed with ad breaks here and there. And there is no proof that advertising actualy works. At best, it's a very indirect and unreliable way of turning attention into money.

@schratze'Simply not giving $ is not stealing' — shoplifters slogan. If public offer is 'content in exchange of advertising' then not watching advertising is stealing, because you break your part of the contract.

@Camel @schratze I get where you're coming from, in a way. If I'm not watching an ad, and a creator is paid by number of ad views, that's directly hurting them, I guess. But consider: Without an ad blocker, the TV I've already paid $800 for would show me ads every chance it gets (like, the "Smart TV" OS itself, before I even select an HDMI input or app). This was added via a firmware update after I bought it, without asking consent. Is the adblocker immoral in that situation?

@T045T @Camel @schratze In theory you're right aboug some kind of contract. But in practise the contract is made by the platform not the content crator and the ratio of attention to money and the amount of money that doesn't end up at the content creators are just so f*cked that it's (usually) not worth watching the ads.Matthias Wandel: "Just use an ad blocker, and thanks!" @antifuchs @schratze Even if you think that "stealing" is worse than the benefit you get from being able to block arbitrary elements, there are adblockers that will allow some ads to go throughhttps://help.getadblock.com/support/solutions/articles/6000092027-about-the-acceptable-ads-program-and-non-intrusive-adshttps://adblockplus.org/acceptable-adsIn the same vein, I'm genuinely curious about what you think of extensions like NoScript. is it immoral to disable javascript to run on your browser because ads will get caught in the crossfire?

@Camel @schratze Advertising is immoral. The idea of pushing information by throwing money at it is immoral. It is a form of corruption. Valuable information flows by itself, without sponsors, ads, product placements and all the other alternative forms of shitting-in-your-head.

@Camel @schratze How do you know that is the public offer? If their site allows me to see the content without seeing ads, then that is their public offer. If they won’t let me see their site without ads, then I don’t want to see their site. How is this hard to understand?
