I'm going to start unplugging my chromecast when not in use, the pi-hole got flooded with over 40,000 dns requests overnight! Pi-hole decided to disconnect and internet was disrupted.

@BrewCityMike @sirphenom I got a pi but what is a pi-hole? I don’t know much about the raspberry pi I need to learn more about it.

@BrewCityMike which version do you have? I've the 2nd generation and to my surprise I barely see any traffic on my pihole coming from it other than the necessary connections. With that said, my chromecast is powered by the TV itself thus when I turn the TV off chromecast gets no power.I've a Raspberty Pi 4 w/ 4GB RAM running ubuntu server. Working Temps average 39-45C°Side note, in my network, vonage is the major culprit averaging a daily 15000+ DNS request but my pihole stands its ground.

@BrewCityMike well to be more specific I'm running Pihole with unbound DNS on ubuntu server.

@BrewCityMike I mentioned to better reflect the temps but I think you're referring to Unbound DNS. Unbound is a recursive DNS server. Basically pairing unbound with pihole will make your raspberry Pi a true portable DNS sever with blacklist and whitelists capabilities without having to callout to 3rd-party DNS services like google, cloudflare, etc.https://nlnetlabs.nl/projects/unbound/about/

@one @BrewCityMike Sweet! I use unbound on my VPN so my DNS requests get encrypted in the tunnel too! Remember, you can use Pi-Hole on a regular VM too! (I run mine on Debian)

@Fox @BrewCityMike That is another way to do it, running it directly on your router. You guys are so cool that you had it without even knowing 😎Properly setup, it should redirect all DNS request to it regardless of the device having DNS IPs hardcoded thus capturing and enforcing your pihole blacklists and whitelist on those sneaky DNS request.

@one @Fox @BrewCityMike you can take this one step further and block end users from using a public DNS locally on a device in the network. If you catch the traffic on port 53 and 853 and direct it towards the piHole or AdBlock server.
