The issue with Bitcoin is that 99% of the people in it are in it for merely accidental reasons.

There need to be more ways for people to buy real world goods with cryptocurrency if it's going to be adopted as a currency by more people.

@luke one thing i don't see people talking about alot is how a deflationary currency like bitcoin (slowing down the amount mined until 0) is a very poor design choice for a financial system. If there is a known finite amount of currency, people will hoard, and as more wallets and their owners lose their money due to accidents or deletions, the 52 million "cap" of bitcoin will start going down toohaving some sort of inflation is usually good because it encourages people to actually spend their money instead of hoarding it

@twl @luke That and relying on a fee-market only for network security in the future is a very poor/volatile model. But I'm fairly certain he's a Monero maximalist.

@twl@pleroma.8777.ch This only matters in the twisted vision of the world of Keynesian econ/MMT where the goal of an "economy" is to produce ever increasing transactions to appear on paper to make us appear richer while inflating away actual wealth.

Oh, tell me about it, 6 months ago I wanted to send 100 euros to a country on the other side of the globe. The regular banking system wanted to charge me ~130e, so the other party could receive 100e... so ridiculous... Sent it with ethereum for a provision that I didn't bother to remember :DOn the other hand, it's not that straightforward to sell crypto for goods/services... yet..

@thatguyoverthere@video.odayacres.farm Yeah paying via crypto in real life is actually just as easy as using a credit card, but adoption is non-existent. Crypto will probably become more common on the internet first though.

Probably won't matter. Bitcoin's origins also seem shady, but it somehow got away with that. Bitcoin got to market first so it is allowed all sorts of leeway that any other coin would not be granted. I think that is fine.@twl @luke

"I hate Bitcoin because newbies think it's a way to get rich", wouldn't the video be called "I hate Bitcoin users" instead? It's not Bitcoin's fault so many people think or use it like that, neither is Nakamoto's fault.

@luke I hear a lot about high transaction fees, but I have yet to experience it. Bitcoin has always been a currency, not an investment.

@luke @twl Hoarding was already a thing before Keynes/MMT though. The real economy is always made up of assets that are perishable or require continuous maintainance. Any currency that strays too far from the natural depreciation of assets in the real economy will encourage hoarding. With deflationary currencies like bitcoin this means hoarding of the currency itself.Inflationary fiat that depreciates faster than the real economy will lead to people hoarding other assets, e.g. real estate.

@damjan@videos.shmalls.pw there is bitpay if you want a "professional" solution to paying with crypto. Internet based electronic stores used that here. It works with bitcoin, ethereum and some other coins.

@nicholas_rees Did you read the article I posted? Linux is not a secure operating system and Linus believes that software bugs that cause crashes are just as important as security holes that allow systems to be taken over and have malicious code run on them.
