Apparently, my motherboard is causing my PC to crash/freeze. I thought it was my Ryzen 1600 that was the problem, since there were many articles reporting about issues regarding 1st gen Ryzen and Linux. But I haven't had a crash/freeze almost for 1 year. But today after a bios update it started freezing again. I guess I'll roll back to the older BIOS and look forward to AM5 CPUs coming out this year :D

@Ghosty some linux distros discourage non security updates of bios and cpu microcode. the less you are able to add, the more you are able to remove, the better.

@Ghosty time to rethink that. if the bios is working with no visible bugs, does it make sense to modify it? adding and removing features in something so bipolar and proprietary must be dangerous?

@Ghosty by the way, i was nuun on freenode years ago. nuun, afternuun, evening, morning, nergal.had to drop arch as i can afford only 1 laptop now. arch kept breaking and msft did maleficence with my systemd processes. so dropped systemd distros and glibc-based packages that may allow them to run easily still.

@Ghosty and arch broke once every 20 months or so. repair was always hard since it would be the one machine that i have internet access with and portable storage did suck. remember when upgrades using old iso would still pull breakage if timed imperfectly perfectly?

@nergal No systemd and no glibc? 😅 That is some hardcore Linux-veganism ;)I simply use arch because everything just works, and I got comfy with it. It sounds silly, but I want my workflow to be seamless across all my devices. Kindof like the thing that Apple is doing, but using 100% FLOSS and focussed around my workflows.

@nergal Honestly: Arch never really broke for me. I got some non-bootable because I did some crap (uninstalling Linux, for example). But I was able to recover using a chroot every time.My current installation is ~3-4 years old. I moved back to Arch from Gentoo.

@nergal Haha! I removed them. Electron is a mess. Some AUR package probably constantly updated their electron version without removing the old version. I just removed every version that is no longer in use.

@nergal I have a pacman hook that backs the module up on a kernel update. So that I can still use nvidias crap without rebooting after kernel update. Usually you combine that with a systemd unit that removes the backup folder on shutdown. I just never enabled that unit :P
