@amolith@nixnet.social I usually don't name it and just name the repository the purpose of the program, and I'm thinking if I have to think of a name I'll just bonk my face on the keyboard and use whatever came out

@amolith normally I name things as something relative to the software, but if nothing fits or if I can't think of anything I default to DOTA or Magic the Gathering related names

@amolith Look for a common word and use that. So that there is zero chance that it will be found in a search. If anyone notices then just misspell it slightly. For this to work it's important to also have no information on the website - just the latest changes in the code.

@amolith The Krowverse is called such because I refer to myself professionally as the Mass Transit Honchkrow

@amolith@nixnet.social varies from project to project but usually descriptive, my status page script is called "machine_status," LENS stands for "Lightweight Extensible Next-generation System," StruKit is a toolkit for structured data, etc.

@amolith names are unique and (re)chosen after they mature, with projects in their early stages having fun/extremely verbose/random names

@amolith@nixnet.social at times projects start with a codename and get renamed later, LENS began as "Blackwell" (which was just a randomly-chosen word)

@amolith Unfortunately I sometimes come up with the name first. Unfortunately, sometimes multiple times per project.

@amolith I tend to mix unique (which I voted for) & shared system names. My browsers (Odysseus, Rhapsode, Amphiarao, Haphaestus) share a greek naming scheme & I'll definitely continue that! @greyor is a useful advisor here! But any of the components which make up my browser engine stack (Haskell Stylist, HURL, Mondrian, etc) explicitly do not. Though these names do all relate to what these modules do.It does take a while to find names that fit...

@amolith It dependsMost of the time, I try to choose a meaningful, possibly unique name that is related to the functionality the project offers.

@TransGal4872 @amolith That was my problem, too. At some point, I wrote a script to generate lots of "speakable" words of a given length and just picked one of them that I liked.(Here's the script: https://github.com/orithena/moerderspiel/blob/master/lib/wordconstruct.py )

@amolith Sometimes it's completely random. Sometimes it's a niche reference that sounds normal enough.

@amolith I tend to give projects a codename taken from a famous disaster.Titanic. Hindenburg. Tacoma Narrows. Torrey Canyon. R101.
