@Li_Chi very good piece. What I found astounding is that I read this book and I do NOT remember neither the rape fantasies of the main character nor the fact that Julia was prostituted nor the stupidity of their relationship. Of course even then I was like "uh huh, sex = love, typical" but no more than that. I was 15 or less. I think women just filter this stuff out. They don't see it, don't register it, it's a male thing and the world is full of male things women are not supposed to comprehend, can't comprehend, we stupid women don't understand anything about love, art, maturity, freedom and so on. The less you understand the more sophisticated it is, leave it to the experts. And women are happy to leave it to the experts because if they try to understand these things only one conclusion will make sense, that men hate them, not just some, but as a whole. Which for a typical woman destroys her entire world, all illusions of peace, love, equality, and if not equality than camaraderie with "anti-establishment" men, the idea of being included in humanity.

@sleepwalker It's so interesting you write that... I felt the same way! I don't remember any of that and I think it was repression of it as I read it too. Wow, thank you for this
