@nergal It's pretty variable by both TLD and what name you want, but you can easily get words/phrases for 10 USD or less if you use a registrar like Gandi, Hover, or namecheap.I don't think I've ever paid more than ~15 USD/yr for exile.digital, though I absolutely need to make time to make better use of it.

@nergal You could use one for free from freenom (.tk, .ga .ml, etc), their service is meh, but hey, it's free so i guess one can't complain

@alexandre a condition is being able to assign subdomains to arbitrary ip addresses.

@nergal Yep, you can, if you want, even use cloudflare as nameservers. You can use either their nameserver or a third party's (well, i guess every registrar allows you to do that)

@alexandre how would that work? if i want to assign surveillance cameras to subdomains, use cloudflare as nameserver?

@nergal Any registrar (that i know of) allows you to set a nameserver, if you want you can use cloudflare, but any would work.Just assign an A record to each subdomain and point it to whatever IP you need.As an advice, i wouldn't make any surveillance system internet accessible (in case there's some exploit or whatever the last thing i want is someone snooping on my house). Prefer a VPN to access your house's network and then access the cameras (i'm assuming this would be yout setup)

@alexandre multiple users using cheap nvr. security would only be a passphrase.would love to make my own nvr solution using single board tech.

@nergal Maybe you might be interested in shinobi, it's what i'm using now, way simpler to setup than zoneminder.Unless of course you want to assign each camera to a subdomain, in which case, if you only have one public ipv4 address i'm not entirely sure how to do (maybe you can use the SRV DNS register?)

@alexandre thinking to run a ddns service on purchased domain, then attach those subdomains to my dns management.

@nergal I've done something similar recently, you can't assign a CNAME to the root of your domain (so say your domain is example.com, example.com has to have an A register pointing to an IP). So the idea of using no-ip/duckdns/dyndns/whatever was not possible because having "example.com" as a CNAME register is not valid per DNS standards. So i end up registering the domain for free on freenom and point the nameserver to cloudflare. then update cloudflare with ddclient

@alexandre does canonical name apply to subdomains?

@nergal Yes, CNAME can only be used on subdomain. I usually use it to make the subdomains point to the main domain. That way i only have to update one entry (the main A record). But you can use it to make the subdomains point to some DDNS address, for example

@nergal .tk and .ml are free for a few months. Try namecheap.
