@pry is this sarcastic? I feel like a lot of free and open source software spaces aren’t friendly or welcoming.

@me it's half and half tbhI partially do think it can be super welcoming in the niche and also find that it's possible for certain projects to not be...ymmv and it 100% varies between projects

@pry @chjara Which are actually FUD. Science community uses CUDA all over because it's actually the easiest solution to get GPU compute, they would use AMD if it's easier (although ROCm is to blame here and not their drivers).

@bionade24@mastodon.social @pry@raru.re i have an old intel+nvidia setupi have never once managed to get the nvidia card working, and in fact, in the process i have bricked 3 separate operating systems (as in, not just break X, but the entire system refused to work)

@bionade24 @chjara having Cuda was actually a big plus since I've wanted to mess around w gpu programming also... I've heard pop_os has ok nvidia support but I may be wrong

@pry @chjara I used it both on Arch and Ubuntu, both time working flawlessly. On Arch you have the nice advantage that you don't need dkms for the standard kernel. I, and I don't think I'm alone never understood the exorbitant criticism. Only problems are Power management on mobile and being closed-source. I personally had far more problems with AMD releasing GPUs before their linux drivers are ready. Nvidia just works.
