Every once in a while, where I live, I'll hear random fast-firing gunshots *hearing them right now* from somewhere nearby.

@vital876 Gunshots or fireworks, both would make sense this time of year.

@Simplicity_teal I think it's just some guy with a gun who lives on my street. I dunno, it's just weird.

@vital876I've never seen a chap with a gun, other than cops, ya know! And have never seen a gun from close proximity! 😐 :blobcat_fingerguns: @Simplicity_teal

@Simplicity_teal There's an initial bang sound and then an echo.

@Simplicity_teal There's also a warning siren that goes off once every few months (right in town). That one's really creepy.

@strawberryfieldsforever @vital876 @Simplicity_teal I used to live in Albuquerque, where people carried openly once in a while. One time I was in line for some OEM oil filters at Jeep dealership and a lady in front of me was carrying a 1911. She also had a veteran cap. Other time I stopped at a stoplight and a guy working in a tire shop next to me had a handgun of some kind. My wife's friend called her a couple days before that because she saw a guy with a rifle at the city hall and she was freaking out. The funny part is, that friend moved in from ... Detroit. So I pointed to tire shop worker to my wife and we had a small laugh about her friend again. I'm in Austin now, which is the liberal butthole of Texas and plastered with prohibition signs all over, so nobody carries openly here. Which is of course the sound way of doing it given the circumstances, but it's a bit of a pity.

@gat I'd prefer it if people didn't carry it openly. In fact, I'd prefer it people didn't carry at all! :blobcatgiggle:Weapons aren't very common over here, and I like it that way! 🤭 @Simplicity_teal @vital876

@Simplicity_teal @strawberryfieldsforever @gatI don't know what to do about guns. If there were less guns, there would be less shootings, but shootings happen because crazy people get guns, not because guns are bad. Guns can be useful, just the same as a computer can be useful. A computer can be used for bad or for good, and so can guns.Guns are the best weapon in existence. If people stopped having guns, they wouldn't have any meaningful defense against anyone with guns.

@Simplicity_teal @strawberryfieldsforever @gatI've been driving for a few *months now, and one thing I can tell you is that there are more terrible, aggressive drivers than there are good drivers. What's that mean? Should people not have cars because many people just can't be trusted with them?I don't know.

@Simplicity_teal @strawberryfieldsforever @gatMy point is, if many people *shouldn't* have a thing, does that mean no one should? And does the benefit of taking that thing away outweigh the cost?

@vital876 @ghost_bird @strawberryfieldsforever @gat but, and I won't argue about this, the carrying guns in public thing is stupid, most places do fine with police departments, and carrying just makes plenty of people uncomfortable whether they're going to admit that or not. this isn't the wild west and patriarchy needs to go, total bs imo lol

@vital876I was reading this article about how easy it is to get a gun in the US.https://money.cnn.com/2015/06/19/news/guns-background-checks/index.htmlIt's a tad old, but I doubt much has changed. It's really really easy in a few states. Almost anyone can get one easily. Background checks are not mandated everywhere.I think the bad outcome of a few bad players far outweighs the benefit of many having guns. Coz I don't know why all having guns is better than none having guns. The primary thing a car does is transport, computer: media, email, internet, Guns: shoot? They all depend on the person wielding it, but one always causes destruction. To buy a means of transport, they test your competence in many ways. To buy a gun, almost nothing. They don't let a minor vote, but they didn't mind him carrying around someone else's gun. 😐Sorry if that was too much! 🤭😁@ghost_bird @Simplicity_teal @gat

@strawberryfieldsforever @vital876 @ghost_bird @Simplicity_teal I used to live in a country where there were "none having guns". It was a dystopian nightmare, the street crime was out of control. One time I walked home from a bus stop (public transit: another dystopian nightmare), and they've beaten me up and took my wedding ring, because I had nothing else. They attacked me because I had an empty cardboard box that I took from work. Another ttime they attacked me because I was wearing a jacket that was too good (I escaped by a miracle, my clothes were soaked in blood). Etc. etc. American is a million times safer with all the guns. People who think that no guns leads to paradise like in Japan have no clue. U.S. is not populated by the Japanese.
