Don't know if the CDC's claim that fully 3/4ths of cases in the US are now Omicron is true. By rigorous testing, not diagnoses based on initial mild symptoms. If a Delta-infected patient mislabeled Omicron dies, Delta deaths move falsely into the Omicron column. Does it matter?Variants are in a COMPETITIVE race in which the fastest-not-more-lethal ultimately win.Because antibodies produced from one strain help fight all other subsequent strains, making variants, in effect, TERRITORIAL.

Scientists STILL don't know why viruses run their courses and go cyclically stable (influenza, common cold), or disappear altogether. There is NOTHING conclusive in the literature about why - only the acknowledgment that they do. The very best thing that could happen to us is the "breakthrough" of a relatively harmless but wildly infectious and rapidly spreading variant - the antibodies produced of which recognize and kill off the other strains.

Were I a lawless Democrat or anyone money/power-dependent and cashing in on fomenting pandemic panic and terror, I would be TERRIFIED of an Omicron, based on what we HAVEN'T seen from it thus far.I would make it the boogeyman from hell. Milk it for all its worth, and try to make everyone see it as responsible for tragedy, suffering and deaths which are attributable to other causes, or that don't exist at all.So, again, I don't know if 3/4 of US cases are now Omicron. But if so, GOOD.

@StevenDouglasIf we include herd immunity, the virus does disappear because the hosts are not susceptible any more.

@Timmerax Yes. And did you notice how the very words "herd immunity" aren't 'herd' that much any more? Not 'uddered' much at all by the milkers? "Ah, that old thing?"Stupid f***s.It's not that those with herd immunity can't be infected - or even spread for that matter.Herd/natural immunity works because the viruses are recognized and snuffed out so quickly, and by so many, right along with their ability to effectively spread.

What I anticipate - nay, fully expect - is an "All Quiet On The Western Front" phase. The "Faux Xi" narrative: Convince everyone that another, possibly MORE deadly "breakthrough" likely imminent. So we need to buckle down, mask up and batten the hatches, just in case. "We've got this one on the run, folks! Don't let up, you'll just cause another 'breakthrough virus' to get out and wreak havoc on us all. We're not there yet. Within ten years we may just be able to start to get a handle on it."

@Timmerax Yes, it's why I literally pray for a rapidly spreading end-of-virus strain, and encourage everyone to do likewise. Because the prayers of the righteous availeth much. Even from just two who agree on a thing.

@StevenDouglas @Timmerax 2 things came to my mind as I read this thread: 1. The Amish here acquired herd immunity early on. They refused to stop meeting for church, etc., and, in ways they live out their faith, trusted God. Many got the virus, a few may have died, but they never stopped living life as always. 2. I'm reading the Omicron, which is spreading like wildfire here, creates antibodies against all variants....

@Meeka @Timmerax Yes. And one more thing.Risk categories for the original Xi virus were narrow, highly constrained - not as broad or deadly as the Delta which followed.Had EVERYONE behaved as the Amish did, how many who died from Delta would have survived had they been prior infected with and survived Xi?Unanswerable, of course, but valid and cogent. Us: Shielded from the strength gained from beating a smaller dog only to be ravaged a much bigger and far less selective one later.

@TreasuresNotTrinkets And Trump was right, of course. It will. Even if "go away" means that it becomes cyclically stable through variants, like the flu and cold that we still propagate like so much annoying baggage. What I like is the notion that we don't just become stronger by surviving variants, but also in overcoming all these ghoulish hobgoblin harbingers and exploiters and generators of fear and suffering and death. Speaking of cyclically stable and annoying baggage.

@Annasmom22 @Timmerax We say "Stay Vigilant" for a reason. Their desire for what we're upholding and defending will NEVER, EVER go away. The very best we can do is make it so that that camel - which is always there, always knocking - does not get so much as a nostril-sized space into the tent.

@StevenDouglas @Timmerax This area is being hit hard with the virus - who really knows which variant at this point. I will say that being vaxxed doesn't seem to change much in these parts, either. Everyone is getting it, some more severe than others - again the vax doesn't make it less so for some (we know at least 10 who died & had the vax). Those who have had it are fine & don't seem affected.

@StevenDouglas I lived in Amish Country for decades. They are tough birds. In the spring of the onset of COVID we were at an Amish auction house in Lancaster County, PA and no one was masked. The Mennonite stores did not require masks either. I stopped at the my favorite dairy and before going in asked do I need a mask and she said, only if you want to. @Meeka @Timmerax One of the things I miss about Lancaster county, my dairy. They still do glass bottles 🙂 https://maplehofedairy.com/

@DonnaLea @StevenDouglas @Meeka @Timmerax Yeah, it's like 15 minutes from me. Probably less. It's a pretty nice store. Though you have to pay attention to dates. They sell a lot of out-of-date stuff so they can sell for cheap.

@Dawnz It’s a great place to live. I lived in Little Britain township, a place too small for a post office and worked in Quarryville. The Amish are some interesting people & just like any other peoples there are good & bad. Most people pass through Quarryville to get to Strasbug to visit Sight & Sound theater.

@Dawnz It’s wonderful you got your little Jasmine to love 💞 My Mom always loved mini doxies. Her first was Cricket decades ago. When she passed my Dad got the dogs he wanted, German Shepherds, Jake & Bubba. When they passed Mom got another doxi and named her Baby Cricket. She then found a breeder in Lancaster county. Who knows, it could have been the same lady you went too.Baby Cricket had 5 in her litter. 1 died, 1was sold, the breeder took her pick and Mom kept 2 of them.
