The school I teach at makes students install a certificate on their personal devices before they can connect to the WiFi, and bans VPNs, so we can filter and log their internet use. 'Think of the children' is the refrain, so we 'protect' them by normalising network snooping and the loss of privacy. This is dangerous --- we shouldn't demonise VPNs, but should teach them how to pick a good one, or how to operate the one their home router probably offers to those with the skills to set it up.1/2

@dsfgs @rochelimit there are no ethical jobs. you are a resource extraction unit for the rich until you become too broken to work and will be replaced by the next migrant in line.

@Eris @rochelimit well to be fair it's a schoolthey're probably snooping to do the complete opposite of protecting kids>oy vey their boomer dad said "let's go brandon" after paying $3.89 a gallon, we must report these right wing domestic terrorists to CPSi sure as hell wouldn't let my kids have unlimited internet access on personal devices, maybe a nice shared computer in a visible part of the house.it's so much worse than when i was growing up. now it's just a demon box of jews peddling pornography and left wing nonsense.

@travisMaybe for kids the clearnet/surveillance is okay. When they turn 18 they can use I2P/Tor.The danger w any surveillance is if its centralised, (eg. Cloudflare, Amazon, CAGFAM ). This gives the megacorps an extreme advantage in all marketplaces. If we are going to watch over everything our kids do then that needs to be done somewhat locally and not persist. The security model would need to support that.At any time, parents can ask to see any data?@icedquinn @NEETzsche @rochelimit

@dsfgs @icedquinn @NEETzsche @rochelimit there is profit in surveillance, sure things ought to be some way but we are in reality. Also the whole "once they turn 18" is kinda meaningless, if that can be enforced there is a problem. People should probably just take care of their kids, this isnt necessarily harsh rules and constant monitoring but maybe just pay attention to them and speak to them. People are rather ok just sort of ignoring their children and it has had bad effects through out time, but helicopter parents can also have negative effects.

@travisThe sad thing about the online sphere today is that it can do damage silently. Subliminally, the kids might not even remember fully where they get info from. It may take a long time to negate. Of course clearnet, and fakeStreamMedia are to blame for a lot of stuff already, but at least we can (generally speaking) see it. There is some sense in having an only-clearnet policy for under 18s.@icedquinn @NEETzsche @rochelimit

@dsfgs @travis @icedquinn @NEETzsche @rochelimit We need to teach people how to find and verify information, this oddly involves more work than just doing a search but reading between the lines and comprehending information.

@zleap >We need to teach people how to find and verify information, this oddly involves more work than just doing a search but reading between the lines and comprehending information. They have these "critical thinking" classes in a lot of universities these days that literally just tell you to trust sources that are official and reject ones that aren't.@dsfgs @travis @icedquinn @rochelimit

@NEETzsche i remember reading my mothers school textbook in the critthink class and i had this little mini manual for one of mine.yeah. it's gone downhill. classical stuff talks about the trivium (related podcast http://www.triviumeducation.com/ ) which is the process of identifying symbols (grammar), resolving conflicts (logic) and packaging the resolved packet in to a derivable work (rhetoric)now it's primarily about trusting experts.@zleap @dsfgs @rochelimit @travis

@icedquinn Yeah. But the fact that they try to package "trust the experts" as "critical thinking" is unironically offensive. Legitimately just makes me mad thinking about it. It's literally teaching the opposite of critical thinking as critical thinking@dsfgs @rochelimit @travis @zleap

@NEETzsche @dsfgs @icedquinn @rochelimit @travis Well yeah, the idea would be to try andj see both view points. One of my OY assignments years ago was to compare Hydrogen, Biofuel and Electric to power cars, using evidnce for / against each from the course materials.my conclusion was that neither are perfect but some are better than others depending on say if you are taking short / long journeys for example. Electric cars are apparently going to solve problems, those arguments make no mention of getting Lithium from the ground to the factory and the environmental impact of doing that. So much for trusting the experts, when they give a very biased argument.

@zleap @NEETzsche @dsfgs @rochelimit @travis yes they once had us do reports on drugs and conveniently the school had a web filter that blocked any website that spoke positively about drugs.

@dsfgsThe CS curriculum I teach allows me to show the few kids in the class how to use ssh tunnels and VPNs, but the management aren't too keen. The crazy thing is that all the MiTMing going on doesn't make kids safer, as they have the devices to bypass it. It is all for ass-covering, so the school pats itself on the back for child protection done well, while kid remain uneducated on internet safety habits.@travis @icedquinn @NEETzsche@iddqd.social#securityTheatre

@icedquinn @dsfgs @NEETzsche @rochelimit @travis This is the issue with filtering, for most cases it works in some cases it gets in the way of doing course work.it may be they don't want to promote the use of drugs,Of course we need to understand vocabulary hereDrugsmedicationNarcoticsAll off which are drugs of some sort of another just the word used depends on how or the legal status. it gets confusing between different countries too.
