How did long hair on men become "dirty" or "feminine" in western society? Curious.

@professionalbigot69 @cyberanathema I will say that was probably the greatest leap forward in men's dress since antiquity. It was the early 19th century. But I daresay, long hair seems to have hung around a bit longer.

@racism_man @professionalbigot69 @cyberanathema It's interesting in relatively recent times. "Dirty" I can't speak on as much, but "feminine" seems like it's dependent almost entirely on a man's OTHER characteristics. Like, a small, effete man will come across as more feminine with long hair, but it can actually make guys on the other end of the spectrum seem tougher and more badass (i.e. bikers, for example). It's strange.

@racism_man @cyberanathema @professionalbigot69 Maybe this is just a result of it becoming less accepted more generally, though. I don't know.

@hyperfuneral I've stopped cutting my hair (apart from trimming the ends every so often), I'm generally very masculine but the fact that I have long hair is seen as "feminine". Except for other guys (Gen X or younger) who have commented that I have "warrior hair." Considering that biblical figures (cf. Samson) are known for having long hair (it's even the source of his power) it just seems like boomer bullshit. My hair is rarely down so I think it's just boomers. @racism_man @professionalbigot69

@racism_man I've noticed that it started becoming a thing around the Victorian Era as a way to distinguish "masculine" European/British men from "savage" African and Asian people. Which is honestly really stupid because before then having long hair was a sign of status and wealth (you have to maintain it) @professionalbigot69

@professionalbigot69 I'd argue it was probably World War 1 and the interwar period. You can't have long hair in military service so it was a visual distinction of if you were "man enough."

@cyberanathema @professionalbigot69 @racism_man I think it's a boomer thing too. I have had everything from a shaved head to shoulder-length hair, and everything in between, and girls (at least the ones I'm interested in) seem to like the long hair, so that's good enough for me. I do get compliments from younger guys (even a lot of black guys, which is interesting) about having "warrior" hair or looking like a "viking" or a "barbarian" (I usually have a big beard, too). I think a certain type of boomer has weird priors about long hair being associated with hippies and folks of that ilk back in their day.

@hyperfuneral It's kept around with counterculture, but the counterculture has *really* shifted since the 60s~70s. I've gotten compliments from mostly women because my hair has natural waves. I've had to trim my beard because of work (I work in food service too) but I'd love to just let it grow out. Zoomers generally don't care, and most don't see it as gender-specific. I can't wait for the boomers to die so this shit will end. @professionalbigot69 @racism_man

@cyberanathema @professionalbigot69 @racism_man Yeah, I left my last service industry job last year and other than some basic trimming and maintenance haven't cut my hair or beard since (real Samson hours). I also just bought my first motorcycle last month, so... become who you are I guess.

@hyperfuneral Not that I'm encouraging anything, but you can use knives or daggers as hairpins, or if it's long enough, hide it under a bun. So yeah, there's that. "Battle haircomb" is a real thing. Bonus of anime longhair chad. @professionalbigot69 @racism_man

@cyberanathema @professionalbigot69 @racism_man this is extraordinarily basedit's funny though, the more I think about it... minimal hair or maximal hair seem to be the two truly ascended options. Sort of a grug - bigbrain alliance thing where the people in the middle are the ones you gotta be suspicious ofSKINHEAD - BARBARIAN SOLIDARITY is what I'm getting at basically

@hyperfuneral Both are extremely established tropes. Characters like Khal Drago and the entire race of Saiyans are canonically known for long hair. The cossacks had somewhere in between as did the samurai, some viking tribes and shaved heads are a trademark of some prominent WS groups. So yes, you are 100% correct. @professionalbigot69 @racism_man

@cyberanathema @professionalbigot69 @racism_man the samurai / Geralt of Rivia - style topknot with loose back is an incredibly powerful hairstyle that makes it clear what you're about but also seems to go over pretty well when you have to deal with modernsBack in the day (major punk priors) I had a mohawk that I let grow out so long that it just became cossack hair. If I ever had to "clean up" for a job again I might bring that back, shit was badass IMO

@hyperfuneral @professionalbigot69 @racism_man We need to reclaim the top knot from hipsters. Half topknot is very based but difficult to do the first time. Also, stop using hair ties. Get u-shaped pins or a hair stick/hair fork. They won't pull out your hair and look cooler/fancier.

@hyperfuneral They take a bit to get used to, but they're so simple when you get used to it. It takes 10s to put my hair up and taking it down is so relaxing and cool. @professionalbigot69 @racism_man

@cyberanathema >many men were drafted into the world wars>they had short hair in the army>short hair becomes associated with masculinity; long hair signals that you are anti-war (in the 60s/70s) etc
