Have you ever looked at your contact list in your phone, then think"Yes, I kinda want to fill all the information I can about these people even tho I only talk to a fraction of them"Seriously tho, how do you manage and sync contacts across devices outisde the Google ecosystem?#askfedi #askfediverse

@joeligj12 well, I fill in all the information I can about these people even though I only talk to a fraction of them :) simple as that.Syncing happens through the caldav protocol.

@yarmo how do you manage CalDav? I have self-hosted Radicale in the past, and I could keep doing it, but Picture management is kinda wonky on a vcf file, since its stored in base64 (I think?)Right now I use disroot's nextcloud instance with caldav too, but the web interface is pretty slow.I am editing all on my device, I am basically looking for a dav client for Linux.Thunderbird dav address book is kinda wonky too, and changes don't sync that fast for me.Any ideas?

@joeligj12 I use a self hosted nextcloud instance, so basically what you do right now.Is it a pleasant experience? Far from it. Guess I may have a smaller contact list than you do? It's been months since I added a new contact. But yeah, when I do add contacts, I use the nextcloud interface and once it's done, it's done.It syncs with an Evolution client on Linux. Haven't bothered trying to edit contacts with it. Again, given the frequency, I just edit with nextcloud.

@joeligj12 as other people said: #davx5 & #nextcloudeither other's people server or your own, it works 🎉 #thunderbird >91 has native support for #carddav https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1347462 so I added my nextcloud accountYears now without a google's account to sync in my device.

@joeligj12 @xpil I’m one of those weirdos who likes to have as much info filled in for my contacts as possible. I dont do it for every contact, but i do for the main ones - friends, fam, school, work, Dr, dentist etc.I host email with #Zoho and user their contact and cal too. They support DAV so I just sync across all my (#Apple) devices using that. All works really well.

@xpil @joeligj12 My contact list is entirely out of reach from all #MACFANG entities. The problem is not me, but all the normies who put my info in their Outlook & Google platforms. What can i do about that? At one point I gave each contact a unique forwarding address, so Google could not use email address as a key to link my profile in different friend’s DBs together but it may be futile.

@joeligj12 I use a selfhosted SoGo for contacts now, and previously I have used a selfhosted Nextcloud. Both worked really well, but it felt more naturally to keep email and calendar together rather than files and calendar together when I set up SoGo for hosting my webmail.

@joeligj12 having the most information is okay :) This helps me remember why some people even are in my contact list hahaI use Mailbox.org for all my "groupware": email, calendar, contacts. For contacts I use CardDAV via DAVx5 on my Android and the built-in sync on my MacBook 💁🏻♂️

@joeligj12 These days, I use ownCloud with DAVx5.Before I started to use ownCloud as a test, I used the all encrypted DAV service fruux.com that are created by sabre.io (which are the creators of Baïkal).

@joeligj12 I'm re-thinking the whole sync concept all together. I alluded to this in my last blog post but it probably needs a dedicated post. Scrolling through my list of contacts, I need probably 10% of them. The other 90%, if they ever message me I can just say, "sorry new phone". If we are talking about 20 contacts I don't need to sync them. I can keep a paper copy. *shock *awe I also am trying to live a simpler life though so 🤷♂️

@joeligj12 update: it's more than 20 lol. I had thought there is no way I can have as many contacts as I do... But, I'm deleting a lot of them so I think the concept will still hold true :)
