@mrman If any copies of java are running for anything (including Minecraft)... you should worry and just make sure.

@mrman Oh, I started toying with Linux around 1991... REALLY started running it on dedicated machines around 1996 in my house and building my own kernels... then ditched Windows altogether and went 100% Linux at home in 2003. :) Never missed it and never lacked for it.

@Dan_RamosI installed redhat off floppies from the back of a book. I couldn't get networking up. Was switching to Windows and downloading files but I never could get it to work. That was probably 6 to 8th grade sometime. 95-97ish

@mrman That's around the time I turned 24 and moved out to Silicon Valley and started to get into Solaris. I still saw Linux as a hobby OS but it started to finally look promising by then as a real OS. In my opinion, at the time, it just needed some more hardening, a little more POSIX compliance and MUCH better SMP (symmetrical multiiprocessing) support to be a true threat to things like Solaris, HPUX, IRIX, etc. at the time. It got there and surpassed them pretty fast not too longer after.

@Dan_RamosNerd! It's even getting pretty decent gaming finally. Not that I game but it didn't when I did. I predicted years ago windows running a Linux kernel with a Windows de.

@mrman Linus has had decent gaming since about 2012 (technically even before that, but it was VERY hard to get either Linux and Windows games working well under Linux.. but I was doing it just fine for years). These days, there's absolutely no effort involved to get about 90% of the stuff working and the other 10% is either possible but hard.. or impossible (usually due to anti-cheat, not so much due to DRM anymore--not that that was ever too hard to defeat most of the time anyway).

@mrman For the record: My gaming in Linux is far superior.. even with Windows games. :) I can bind ANYTHING to ANYTHING (keyboards, mouse, XBOX 360 stick, WiiMote, Nintendo Switch joysticks/pads, Tartarus hand controller, foot pedals, etc.) It all works... flawlessly.. and I can make ANYTHING look like any kind of input with very little effort... admittedly, some of it is via CLI (xboxdrv, wiimote, switch controllers, foot pedal controls, for examples) but that's the way I prefer it anyway.

@Dan_RamosI don't have all that but everything I've tried has worked with maybe some tweaking. I finally got the TMNT arcade rom to work. I'd been trying for 10+ years. With 3 controllers. We played it 1 time, beat it and that was it lol

@mrman Haha.. awwww... I think I was already doing that back in 1994-1995 in Linux. Emulators were always working well in Linux. I remember playing N64 games in Linux using my VooDoo... 3? Or was it 5? Wayyy back around 1998... and it worked GREAT in Linux. Kind of astounding using the glide drivers for 3D gaming back when there was almost NOTHING out for Linux that did 3D accelerated graphics gaming.

@Dan_Ramos @mrman but this is only checking for package on distro level. For libs included in the other software, you will have to sweep the system and hope for the best.

@Dan_Ramos @mrman btw, i believe that most people will have this same issue. If you are using only floss then you are covered by the way packages are used. You can mitigate latest variant in /etc/profile on linux based systems right? That can be done to some extent in Windows, using sys vars.Problem are proprietary sw packages and desire to pay for c**p. You cannot help but wait for them. I am still waiting for response from some companies on this.
