I got this luxury car for less than $2,000 with persistence and luck. This is my Lexus ES 330.Earlier this year, I didn’t know anything about cars, despite needing a new one. I asked subscribers and most all said I should look into getting a Toyota/Lexus or Honda/Acura for a long-lasting low-maintenance used car.

       1) Finding Thinkpads “ugly” is an indicator of a very superficial sense for aesthetics. 2) I’ve been told that early Saabs are pretty much thinkpads when it comes to cars. But that may be more of an European thing.

One: Finding Thinkpads “ugly” is an indicator of a very superficial sense for aesthetics. Two: I’ve been told that early Saabs are pretty much thinkpads when it comes to cars. But that may be more of an European thing. To be more specific, my father drives a Saab 900 cabriolet since 2009, which he bought secondhand for I believe somewhat around 6000–7000 €. It’s officially an oldtimer now, but it still runs nicely. (Being an oldtimer also has legal benefits here in Germany, such as being exempt from certain environmetal regulations.) Of course, it needs to see a mechanic more often nowadays, just as an aging man needs to see a doctor more often, but it still runs nicely. Before that, he drove a Saab 900 turbo for about fifteen years, which he also bought as a used car. And it was quite fast, too. I remember him doing 220–230 km/h (that’s about 140 mph) on the autobahn with me on the passenger seat. Fun times!

I honestly do not know about cars, but I want to share a story which may help in your choice. Most people live in cities, and even places with ~500 residents have proper roads. Living in a city, I rarely saw a jeep or any tall car in my life, and thought it was stupid to have one of those, since their use is so rare. But when I went to the countryside (think of many villages with less than 100 permanent residents) tall cars are a blessing. Not impoverished/poor villages, there are proper roads, but if you want to go to the fields or mountains nearby, there are only dirt roads, and normal cars will get heavily damaged (think of the pipes below bumping often)And if you think about it, all cars should by default come with suspension and be tall, so as to be able to use 100% of roads (by including shitty dirt roads)The only reason tall cars haven't dominated the market (think of your favourite car, but slightly taller and with good suspension) is because of goverment fees forcing higher taxes on them, as if they are a luxury item.I do not know how it is there in America, on car tax categories or how prevalent dirt-roads are in farmfields, but my point is if you have dirt roads nearby, take a look into tall cars. Especially since it enables true "inawoods" lifestyle, for going in off-grid areasP.S. Very old Toyotas are too durable to be true, I can confirm from experience. But good luck finding one which isn't used for 10+ years lol

A fine choice. It should also be pointed out how even some Lexus cars like the IS are very sporty. They're not all dull like normies think. It's very nice when its competitors BMW and Mercedes heavily cheaped out and are not anywhere near as reliable. The average normie also has no idea BMW and Mercedes used to be well made in the 20th century and just assumes all the repairs they're doing on their 21st century plastic toy on wheels is just "part of the experience" or something.Protip: you can make any modern 21st century German barbie toy car fan butt mad with this simple video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eakUNQqeAJE

This whole thinkpad meme is getting old. We are getting to old. After 8 years of die hard using Linux on old thinkpads and dells, I got myself a comfy macbook air m1. It just wurks. Charge the battery once per two days and kept compiling and editing for hours. Productivity goes up.

But what about maintenance? Is it really expensive to service this car?

@the_tech_beast@tilvids.com From what I gather, most of the parts are shared with Toyotas and widely available and cheap. That goes for the engine, but also some of the interior stuff too (e.g. I replaced the center console which was broken when I got it with a $50 Camry console).

@luke @the_tech_beast There are a lot of tricks you should be aware of if you are going to look for stuff like this. Many cars share parts not only in engine but suspension and electronics. Usually the most specific are going to be the inside trim.To deal with that your best bet is to get an older vehicle that has multiple years of production after, then you will have the best option for continued new parts, but also parts from junk yards.

@luke speaking of Thinkpads... which thinkpads do you prefer? I have read about 20 different opinions about different models and the last one I bought for something like $45 was a huge bust. It needed specific drivers, so now I'm very cautious about buying another one.Right now I have an Asus EeePC Netbook, but it is about to give up the ghost. Do you have an actual favorite model?

@herag@dobbs.town If I was going to guess probably the X60 or something like that would be favorite in principle (Is able to Libreboot, has that nice boomer 4:3 aspect ratio) and the X220 for practical modern use in the bloated modern era of the web :P

@herag@dobbs.town What is your price range and what features do you want? Stick with the X, T and W/P series as the other Thinkpads/Ideapads are just filler products. There's the X200,T400 and W500 if you want a truly free computer since they don't have the intel management engine and you can install Libreboot on them. There's the X220/X230 which are really good small computers and the lass fully upgradable X series. There's the X270 which was still somewhat upgradable but with only 1 RAM slot and 1 upgradable drive. There's the T440p and the T470p which have desktop-grade CPU's in them. There's the T480 which is extremely upgradable and a really good "new" thinkpad. The last fully upgradable 14-inch T series. And lastly there's the W/P series which are desktop replacements if price isn't a factor. The P50,P51,P52,P53 are all great on paper with dedicated Nvidia quatro graphics and extremely good RAM and storage upgradability. There's way more to list here, but check wikipedia for the X, T and W/P series if you want more info on the specs, and check notebookcheck for very indepth reviews for them.

The most thinkpad cars are 80s cars: they are ugly and nobody wants them (outside of some exceptions like the 930 or 959) and thus they are cheap and also very durable and long lasting thanks to little to no bloated electronics inside them that need to be fixed.
