@selea I'd rather they leave Mastodon then go closed source. Just saying it could be worse. Their choice of social media doesn't change the code of their programs which is what truly matters.

@selea I was considering moving to either them or Tutanota some months ago. Glad I didn't make that decision at that time. Still need to find one that values privacy and security, especially one that fights for the users.

@claudiom @selea Migadu is worth a look. I've been with them for a few years. No complaint at all.

@mgrondin @selea @jaywilliams I'll be checking out both of these solutions (FastMail and Migadu) soon. Thanks for the heads up. 👍

I wonder when Tutanota will do the same. I have stopped recommending them to anyone a long time ago.I think Migadu is a very good choice.

@selea You see, this maybe is one of the things I dislike about Protonmail. To me, they arealso way too business-like kinda. Do you know what I mean?I therefore highly prefer @Tutanota Yes, they are a business too, but they feel much more as focused on people, less on profit. And actually, that is a good strategy I think, if it even is as strategy

@selea I've been using Protonmail for 6 years, and during that time they have fixed exactly zero of the flaws on Android that actually hurt my business. In fact, it has become worse.I will have to bite the bullet and change my freelancer email to some other provider, it seems. It's annoying, I wanted to like Protonmail.

@selea In other words, the Fediverse doesn't make its users isolated and manipulable enough for them. I consider this as a totally legit indicator for psychologists.

@selea considering ProtonMail got caught out collecting and sharing IP addresses of users despite previously claiming they never do that, I am not surprised and wouldn’t trust a single word out of Proton’s virtual mouth.

@Upjohn94 @selea I think the issue was in people's interpretation of what Proton's privacy policy was really saying, prior to the incident.Proton is a company, and has to comply with the laws of the countries in which it operates. If they're presented with a warrant, they must comply. If people thought that the data being handed over wasn't already being collected, then they probably don't understand email protocol.Ideally, they wouldn't do this - but, we don't live in an ideal world.

@fcktheworld587 @selea I agree and this is why as a rule I don’t trust anything I don’t self-host unless the clients are open source and E2EE, but their privacy policy did previously state explicitly that they did not collect IP addresses and they marketed themselves on this claim too, hence the ensuing anger.Signal by contrast is based in the US, the nation that spies on the world, and it’s been proven multiple times by FBI subpoenas that they have never been able to provide IP addresses or other PII, only: phone number (which the FBI already needed to make the request), time the account was created, and last time it was logged into. That’s it.I think Proton’s main issue is that email is inherently not a private platform. And it’s also a reminder that Switzerland doesn’t have exceptional privacy laws despite all the marketing focusing on how being supposedly more private than their competitors because they’re a Swiss company. When it comes to email, if you want privacy, just assume the metadata is going to be logged and encrypt the contents client-side. You can do this on Gmail just as much as you can on ProtonMail.

@selea Probably noticing that most instances have protonmail blocked from signups because they're such a massive abuse vector.
